The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for advocating and supporting adults 22 and over with intellectual and developmental disabilities by empowering them to be as active in their lives as they can. Their support needs include, but are not limited to, household maintenance, meal prep, shopping, bathing, toileting, dressing, teeth brushing, etc. The DSP may also assist them to medical appointments, banking, community integration, outings, administer medications, follow Behavior Support Plans, Individual Support Plans and goals, and adhere to medical guidelines. DSP workers receive paid New Employee Orientation, paid CPR/First Aid, PABC, Defensive Driving, and Medication Administration Program (MAP), as well as program and person specific training at the individuals’ home. The DSP must be able to safely evacuate individuals from the home in the event of an emergency and maintain certifications, handle job related duties in compliance with Agency policies and follow all DDS regulations/policies.
