The Direct Support Professional (DSP) role is crucial in assisting individuals with maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities. This position involves upholding personal rights, providing emotional support, and building positive relationships through patience and tolerance. The DSP supports individuals in achieving their personal goals for a quality of life, engaging in respectful communication using person-first language, and encouraging social engagement and community connections. This role is responsible for the constant supervision, protection, and care of individuals, ensuring adherence to program guidelines, and facilitating training in fire safety. The DSP must identify and escalate signs of potential harm to self or others, ensuring health, wellness, and safety by managing crisis situations in accordance with policies and regulations. Support is provided in various settings, following individualized service and behavior support plans, and adhering to DDD Standards. The DSP ensures the implementation of person-centered plans, including Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Individualized Service Plans (ISPs), Staff Action and/or Life Plans, and maintains a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment. Safe handling procedures and infection control protocols are essential. The role involves assisting with personal care, ADLs, teaching skills, supporting advocacy, facilitating communication, and ethical decision-making. Meal preparation, transportation, medication administration, and managing funds are also key responsibilities. The DSP will develop specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs, implement behavior support plans, collect and record data, and communicate with support circles. Teamwork, completing trainings, and maintaining documentation are vital. The DSP uses foundational teaching skills and understands behavior as communication, employing person-centered thinking. Reporting maintenance and safety concerns, consulting with leadership, and utilizing approved intervention techniques are also part of the role. The DSP may provide coverage in various settings and assist with treatment plan development, complying with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA.
