The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a crucial role in assisting individuals to maximize their strengths, interests, and abilities. This position upholds personal rights, provides emotional support, and builds positive relationships through patience and tolerance. The DSP supports individuals in meeting personal goals, engages in respectful communication using person-first language, and encourages social connections within the community. Key responsibilities include ensuring the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, maintaining program guidelines, facilitating fire safety training, and identifying potential harm to self or others. The role also involves ensuring health, wellness, and safety by managing crisis situations and adhering to policies and regulations. Support is provided in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing skills for individuals with diverse needs and adhering to DDD Standards. The DSP ensures the implementation of person-centered plans, including Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Individualized Service Plans (ISPs), and Staff Action/Life Plans. Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment, utilizing safe handling procedures, and adhering to infection control protocols are also essential. The role involves assisting with personal care, ADLs, teaching habilitative skills, supporting advocacy, communication, and ethical decision-making. Meal preparation, transportation, escorting individuals to appointments and activities, and assisting with purchases and personal funds are also part of the duties. Medication administration, inventory, and scheduling medical appointments are critical. The DSP will operate agency vehicles, develop an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge, and implement Behavior Support Plans. Data collection, observation, and reporting of behavioral changes are required. Communication with support circles, including families and external providers, is essential. The DSP is a member of a team, providing feedback and maintaining a solution-oriented approach. Completing necessary trainings and certifications, maintaining documentation in electronic health records, and utilizing teaching skills are also key aspects of the role. The DSP will report maintenance and safety concerns, consult with leadership, and utilize approved intervention techniques. Support may be provided in various settings, including off-site locations, and participation in treatment plan development may occur. Compliance with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, is mandatory. All other duties as assigned will also be performed.
