About The Position

We are seeking individuals who will enjoy and successfully work independently and together in a supportive team environment in a variety of locations in our Angus location, supporting Individuals with developmental disabilities who reside in a wide range of living situations. The Direct Support Professional provides supervision and support as needed to people with developmental disabilities in all aspects of daily living including personal care, domestic skills, home maintenance, money management, use of community businesses and resources, recreation, medical, medications and safety. Due to the nature of the work, work schedules may include a combination of days, afternoons, weekends and overnight asleep/awake shifts and are based on the needs of the persons supported.

Requirements

  • DSW College Diploma or equivalent diploma or degree in social sciences. Minimum two-year college program; and/or Curative Education, PSW and Social Therapy diploma or equivalent Camphill seminar and experience.
  • Must be successfully trained in and possess current certifications in First Aid, CPR, NVCI, and Medication Administration.
  • Three (3) years’ experience working with people with intellectual disabilities.
  • Hold a Valid Ontario G Driver’s License with clean driver’s abstract and have access to a reliable vehicle with sufficient insurance.
  • Able to provide a current (within 6 months) satisfactory Criminal Background Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a caring, supportive approach that maintains the dignity and integrity of people receiving service.
  • Provide person-centered support with community activities, i.e. attending medical appointments.
  • Meal preparation, feeding assistance while ensuring safety, following care plans.
  • Maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Aiding individuals with personal care in all aspects of daily living such as dressing, bathing, etc. as needed.
  • Able to inform Individuals about options, and provide opportunities and experiences, supports the exercise of choice and educates about risks and benefits.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Personal Outcome Measures supporting Individuals to develop a plan and achieve their goals.
  • Demonstrate and understand the importance of empowering people to support themselves to be healthy, happy, and safe.
  • Knowledgeable about mental health and best practices in supporting people with those concerns.
  • Perceptiveness and ability to resolve conflict in a diplomatic and reasonable manner.
  • Demonstrate initiative, resourceful and creative.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within the team and with the organization.
  • Promote practices that are inclusive, respectful, and sensitive to diverse communities, including age, culture, and language.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and compliant work environment by ensuring adherence to health and safety legislation, organizational policies and procedures.
  • Design, implement and monitor the progress of activity and recreational programs consistent with peoples Individual Support Plans that will enhance the physical, mental and psychosocial well-being of people.
