The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a crucial role in assisting individuals to maximize their strengths, interests, and abilities while upholding their personal rights. This position involves providing emotional support, building positive relationships, and ensuring the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals. The DSP supports people in meeting personal goals, engages in respectful communication using person-first language, and encourages social connections within the community. Key responsibilities include maintaining program guidelines, facilitating learning in fire safety, and identifying and escalating potential harm to self or others. The role ensures health, wellness, and safety through appropriate supervision and crisis management, adhering to all applicable policies and regulations. DSPs provide support in various settings, following individualized service and behavior support plans, and utilizing support skills for individuals with diverse needs, adhering to DDD Standards. They are responsible for implementing person-centered plans, including Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Individualized Service Plans (ISPs), and Staff Action/Life Plans. Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment, utilizing safe handling procedures, and implementing infection control protocols are also essential. The role involves assisting with personal care, ADLs, hygiene, teaching habilitative skills, supporting advocacy, communication, and dispute resolution. Meal preparation, transportation, escorting individuals to appointments and activities, managing personal allowance funds, and administering medication as prescribed are also key duties. The DSP will also be involved in medication inventory, scheduling medical appointments, utilizing petty cash and house funds, operating agency vehicles, and developing an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific individual needs. They will implement Behavior Support Plans, collect and summarize behavioral data, and report any changes to the clinical or leadership team. Communication with circles of support, including families and external providers, is vital. The DSP will serve as a member of a team, providing feedback and communicating programmatic needs, while maintaining a solution-oriented approach. Completing and maintaining all necessary trainings and certifications, reviewing communication logs, and completing other required paperwork and documentation are essential for compliance and billing. The role utilizes foundational teaching skills and understands behavior as communication, employing person-centered thinking. Reporting maintenance and safety concerns, consulting with program leadership, and utilizing approved YAI and NJ DDD training techniques for challenging behaviors are also part of the responsibilities. The DSP may provide support in various settings, including off-site locations, and may participate in treatment plan development. Compliance with all Federal, State, Local, and regulatory agency requirements, including HIPAA, is mandatory. All other duties as assigned.
