The Direct Support Professional (DSP) role is crucial in assisting individuals to maximize their strengths, interests, and abilities while upholding their personal rights. This position involves providing emotional support, building positive relationships, and supporting individuals in meeting their personal goals for a high quality of life. The DSP engages in respectful communication, encourages socialization, and facilitates community connections. Key responsibilities include ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals, managing crisis situations, and adhering to all applicable policies and regulations. The role requires implementing person-centered plans, including Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) and Life Plans, and maintaining a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment. The DSP will also assist with daily living activities, medication administration, meal preparation, and transportation for individuals. A strong understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs, such as autism spectrum disorders and complex medical needs, is beneficial. The DSP will work as part of a team, complete necessary trainings and documentation, and utilize electronic health records. Compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory requirements is essential. The role may involve responding to challenging behaviors with approved intervention techniques and providing coverage at other locations as needed. Participation in treatment plan development and operating a YAI vehicle may also be required.
