Direct Support Professional (DSP) - Residential Services | FT/PT
About The Position
The Arc of Ocean County is seeking Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) for both Full-Time and Part-Time evening opportunities within their Residential Services team. This role involves helping adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities live as independently as possible by supporting them with everyday activities during the evening hours. The position offers paid training for those new to human services and provides opportunities for career advancement. The DSP role focuses on helping individuals navigate daily life, maintain their homes, pursue hobbies and activities, engage with the community, and build positive relationships, all while ensuring their physical, emotional, and behavioral needs are met. Accurate documentation of support provided is also a key responsibility.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid New Jersey driver's license in good standing with no more than five (5) motor vehicle points.
- Ability to successfully complete all required background checks, screenings, and agency onboarding requirements.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently while demonstrating professionalism, flexibility, and sound judgment.
- Demonstrate employment stability, including at least one (1) year of longevity with a previous employer.
Responsibilities
- Support individuals with evening routines, meal preparation, personal care, medication administration, housekeeping, laundry, and other activities of daily living.
- Help maintain a home environment that is clean, comfortable, organized, and welcoming.
- Encourage healthy habits and routines while supporting individuals in doing as much for themselves as possible.
- Respect personal preferences and choices while helping individuals build greater independence at home.
- Encourage individuals to participate in hobbies, recreational activities, community events, and other experiences that interest them.
- Help people work toward personal goals while recognizing progress and individual accomplishments.
- Create opportunities for individuals to make choices about how they spend their time.
- Support individuals as they participate in appointments, activities, recreation, and community outings.
- Safely transport individuals in agency vehicles when assigned.
- Encourage community involvement and experiences that promote greater independence and meaningful participation.
- Remain attentive to physical, emotional, and behavioral needs and respond appropriately when circumstances change.
- Follow individualized support plans, agency procedures, and established residential practices.
- Communicate important information with supervisors, coworkers, families, healthcare providers, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Work collaboratively with the residential team to provide consistent, high-quality support from one shift to the next.
- Complete electronic documentation and daily service notes accurately and within required timelines.
- Maintain medication records and other required reports.
- Document relevant information so the team has an accurate picture of services, progress, and individual needs.
