This role involves assisting individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, and providing emotional support. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) will support people to meet personal goals, engage in respectful communication, and encourage social activities and community connections. Key responsibilities include the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, maintaining program guidelines, facilitating fire safety training, and identifying and escalating signs of potential harm. The DSP ensures health, wellness, and safety by providing supervision, managing crisis situations, and adhering to policies and regulations. Support is provided in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing support skills for people with varying needs and demonstrating OPWDD Core Competencies. The role requires ensuring the implementation of person-centered plans, including protective oversight (IPOPs), Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), and Staff Action/Life Plans. Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment, utilizing safe handling procedures, and implementing infection control protocols are also essential. Specific tasks include assisting with personal care, ADLs, laundry, housekeeping, medication administration, teaching skills, supporting advocacy, communication, and dispute resolution, facilitating ethical decision-making, preparing meals, and transporting/escorting individuals. The DSP will develop an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs, implement Behavior Support Plans, collect and summarize data on behavior, and report changes to the clinical and leadership team. Collaboration within a team is crucial, involving feedback, communication of programmatic needs, and a solution-oriented approach. Completing and maintaining all necessary trainings and certifications, reviewing communication logs, and entering data into electronic health records are required. The DSP will also complete other required paperwork and documentation accurately and within timeframes. Foundational teaching skills and person-centered thinking to support positive interactions are necessary. Compliance with all Federal, State, Local, and regulatory agency requirements, including HIPAA, is mandatory. Reporting maintenance and safety concerns to the Program Supervisor and consulting with program leadership are part of the role. The DSP will utilize approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques for challenging behaviors and may provide coverage for other staff, potentially at different locations. Participation in treatment plan development and operating a YAI motor vehicle may be required for certain assignments.
