This role involves assisting individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, and providing emotional support. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) supports people to meet personal goals, engages in respectful communication, encourages socializing, and facilitates community connections. Key responsibilities include the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, ensuring their health, wellness, and safety by managing crisis situations and adhering to policies. The DSP provides support in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing core competencies. They ensure the implementation of person-centered plans, maintain a clean and safe therapeutic environment, and utilize safe handling procedures and infection control protocols. Specific tasks include assisting with personal care and activities of daily living, administering medication as prescribed, teaching skills, supporting advocacy, assisting with communication, facilitating ethical decision-making, preparing meals according to dietary needs, and transporting individuals to appointments and activities. The role also involves developing an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs, implementing Behavior Support Plans, collecting and summarizing data on behavior, and reporting any changes to the clinical or leadership team. The DSP is a member of a team, providing feedback and communicating programmatic needs, while completing and maintaining necessary trainings and certifications. They review communication logs daily, make entries, and use electronic health records. Documentation includes incident reports, updating files, and tracking incidents. The DSP uses foundational teaching skills and understands behavior as communication. They comply with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, and report maintenance and safety concerns. Consultation with program leadership and participation in team meetings are expected. The role requires utilizing approved training techniques for challenging behaviors and may involve providing coverage at other locations or assisting in the development of treatment plans. For certain assignments, operating a YAI vehicle to transport individuals may be required.
