About The Position

The Direct Support Staff provides direct care and services to persons with developmental disabilities. The Direct Support Staff is available to the individuals served during their assigned shift to provide ongoing availability to the individuals served. Duties consist of quality interaction and support of individuals in all activities of daily living, personal care, routine housekeeping, cooking, shopping, and community integration. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Under the direction of the HCS Program Manager and within federal, state and local guidelines performs entry-level to routine habilitative and rehabilitative care work with individuals who have developmental disabilities. This position works on a rotating schedule that changes every other week. Direct Care Staff may be assigned to any home within their assigned shift based on organizational need. The assigned shift may vary and may include any week/weekend day, evening, or night shift.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Knowledge of rehabilitative programs for individuals with developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and applicable computer software.
  • Ability to provide resident care; to prepare and maintain records both electronically and on paper, to administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), to conduct prevention and management of aggressive behavior (PMAB), and to communicate effectively.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license, auto liability insurance and a driving record acceptable to the Centers insurance requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Work behavior must be compatible with Center value statement and Policies and Procedures Manual contributing to an environment of problem solving, building trust, conflict resolution, and customer service.
  • Ability to perform tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to plan and schedule work and implement directives without constant supervision.
  • Ability to present a professional appearance and conduct when representing the Center.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in all aspects of the ongoing activities of the residential program.
  • Develops rapport with each individual served in a manner that demonstrates respect and an approach that centers on each person’s goals and preference.
  • Ensures safety of individuals served by providing adequate supervision to ensure health and safety needs are met and/or reported for each individual served.
  • Is knowledgeable and follows Individual Implementation Plans and Behavior Management Plans or Behavior Guidelines for each individual served.
  • Assists individuals served with money, record keeping, and purchasing as required per Center procedures.
  • Adheres to all emergency and preventative safety procedures in the performance of all work duties.
  • Provides emergency intervention when necessary according to HHSC and Center rules and procedures.
  • Provides training and administration of medications according to Center policy and instructions from nursing services.
  • Assists individuals in housekeeping duties to the extent needed and completes remaining cleaning tasks as assigned.
  • Provide personal care for individuals with significant physical impairments to ensure optimal personal hygiene.
  • Completes documentation that reflects service provision including observation notes, incident reports, and behavior data cards, training data cards, medication administration records and log book.
  • Ensures documentation is completed within time lines 100% of the time.
  • Ensures documentation is accurate 100% of the time per HCS billing guidelines.
  • Reports allegations or suspicions of abuse, neglect, or exploitation per Center policy.
  • Frequent daily driving within the catchment area is required by providing transportation for individuals, as required, maintaining Center guidelines and State laws.
  • Assists individuals served with meal planning and food preparation in accordance with individual choices and needs.
  • Assists individuals served in shopping for supplies, groceries and personal items following guidelines of individual served choice and all purchasing regulations.
  • Completes tasks within assigned time lines.
  • Ensures that internal communications follow departmental procedures with respect to protocol and lines of authority.
  • Adheres to all Center Standards of Conduct.
  • Perform additional duties as deemed necessary by department supervisor within designated timeframes.
  • Demonstrate high ethical standards, trustworthiness, and personal integrity.
  • Regular attendance, dependability, and promptness are required for the 8-5 work day or agreed upon hours 100% of the time, to ensure consistency and completeness of program’s processes.
  • Successfully complete training required to maintain skill competency and cross training to ensure consistency across program procedures.
  • Complete continuing education as required by professional standards and the Center. This includes Certification in First Aid, CPR and PMAB.
  • Must have and maintain a valid drivers’ license with an acceptable driving record.
