About The Position

The Direct Services Manager oversees the operation and performance of internal food distribution programs, ensuring efficient and effective service to address community food insecurity. This role includes managing a team of five employees, providing guidance, support, and direction to optimize program operations and align distribution efforts with the organization’s strategic goals. Imperative to this role is the ability to think critically, problem-solve, forge new relationships, and interact with individuals throughout the organization and community in a positive fashion. The Direct Services Manager may be required to complete other tasks as assigned by the Director of Programs in support of FSD’s mission.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Previous experience working in a nonprofit or external facing role
  • Exceptional written and oral communication
  • Demonstrates good judgment and exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to quickly resolve conflict using tact, sensitivity, and discretion
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Professional demeanor with an aptitude for analytical thinking and problem-solving
  • Responsible, well organized, and demonstrated initiative
  • Excellent customer service skills, both in-person, virtually, and on the telephone
  • Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively; follow through on tasks with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook
  • Knowledge of nonprofit organizational practices
  • Passion for and commitment to Feeding San Diego’s mission to alleviate hunger and food insecurity
  • Reliable transportation and possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, a satisfactory driving record, including proof of personal vehicle insurance coverage and insurability under the Agency’s insurance carrier standards.
  • Must be able to obtain and keep a forklift and electric pallet jack certification. Training will be provided.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, social work, or another related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in program management, team leadership, or food distribution operations, preferably within a nonprofit or community-focused organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the day-to-day operations of internal food distribution programs.
  • Develop and implement processes to ensure efficient, equitable, and effective food distributions.
  • Monitor program performance metrics and adjust strategies to meet distribution goals.
  • Coordinate resources to meet the needs of distribution sites.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, safety standards, and local regulations.
  • Supervise the Direct Services Team, providing clear direction, coaching, and performance feedback.
  • Delegate responsibilities and manage workloads to optimize team efficiency.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to communicate updates, set goals, and address challenges.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative team culture aligned with organizational values.
  • Contribute to long-term strategic planning for food distribution programs.
  • Prepare reports on program performance, staff productivity, and distribution impact.
  • Develop and maintain budgets for program operations, ensuring cost-effective resource allocation.
  • Identify and implement initiatives to improve program efficiency and outcomes.
  • Lead or support special projects and campaigns, such as seasonal distributions or program expansions.
  • Frequent interaction with all FSD staff and volunteers of our community.
