We have a full-time position for a Direct Materials Buyer role at our Elkmont, Alabama Manufacturing Plant. This position will report directly to the Purchasing Manager. The work schedule is Monday through Friday with a flexible morning schedule to be determined with the purchasing manager but could include weekend work as maybe necessary for the business operations. This position will be responsible for obtaining purchased components and services from suppliers at the lowest total cost consistent with considerations of quality, reliability of source and urgency of need. Assignments are broad and complex in nature and require technical expertise, ingenuity, and independent evaluation. Areas of responsibility may include purchasing raw materials, manufactured materials, various components, MRO supplies, services and commodities as assigned by the Purchasing Manager. Evaluate product and services in terms of quality, delivery, and price to provide the most value to the requisitioning party and the corporation. Develop and execute strategies for continuous improvement of overall total cost of procurement. This should include cost and inventory reduction, delivery performance, and quality improvement. Examine, advise, and recommend change to purchasing activities such as: inventory levels, material scheduling, computerized inventory programs, stocking strategies, and procedures to ensure maximum and efficient usage of plant manufacturing capacity and assets in relation to production requirements.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, MBA preferred.
One to three (1-3) years’ experience in purchasing, accounting and inventory control practices and procedures and/or manufacturing preferred.
Previous inventory management experience.
Strong negotiating skills.
Good interactive people skills with the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, management, and/or individuals.
Collaborator and team leader when needed.
Ability to apprise a situation and counsel team members accordingly.
Work safely as a condition of hire and continued employment.
Able to negotiate and write contracts for MRO and direct supplies (following standardized company templates).
Ability to manage new product and process improvement projects in a demanding environment.
Experience with MRP/ERP systems is required.

Responsibilities

Develop strategies to control Cost, Quality, Delivery, and Product improvement in the Supply Base.
Raw material/supply purchasing.
Develop and execute strategies for continuous improvement of overall total cost of procurement. This should include cost and inventory reduction, delivery performance, and quality improvement.
Interact with all departments within the plant to discuss supplies, tooling and services required.
Identify and dispose of obsolete material.
Identify activities and conditions requiring corrective action, communicate recommendations regarding these matters to the Purchasing Manager and/or plant supervisors for actions to be taken to remedy the matter.
Coordinate purchasing projects with suppliers, including all contracts, purchase orders, tooling agreements, etc.
Keep project timelines on track. This would include assuring parts are quoted based on current sourcing strategies.
Keep all documentation up to date including tooling agreements, contracts, initial stocking levels, and PPAPs.
Coordinate major resourcing projects for the plant.
Assure insourcing opportunities are maximized.
Perform other duties as assigned.
