About The Position

This entry-level Direct Care Aid position at Pearls of Life in Lynchburg, VA, involves performing daily tasks such as checking vital signs and weighing residents, and providing support in accordance with individualized care plans. The role requires assisting residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, incontinent care, transferring, feeding, communication, and ambulation. Key responsibilities also include maintaining residents' comfort, privacy, and dignity, observing and promptly reporting any changes in their condition or behavior, and actively participating in mandatory periodic training to enhance skills in geriatric care.

Requirements

  • Possesses the ability to follow complex written and oral directions
  • Fully understands all aspects of residents’ rights, including the right to be free of restraints and free of abuse
  • Uniforms must be neat and clean, closed toe shoes are required
  • Must have basic computer skills
  • Must be able to perform duties in accordance with the guidelines mandated by Social Services as the licensing agent of this facility
  • Be of acceptable physical and mental health to carry out assigned duties
  • Employee must possess mature judgment skills and be able to respond to emergency situations
  • Attendance is required during inclement weather
  • Graduation from high school or GED
  • Hold a valid certificate of completion of 120 hours coursework or present NA (Nurse Aide) certificate, PCA (Personal Care Aide) certificate, DCA (Direct Care Assistant) Certificate from a reputable and recognizable affiliation within the guidelines of the Virginia Board of Nursing/Department of Health Professions
  • State Police background check that is free from barrier offenses
  • A current Tuberculosis screening on or within 7 days prior to the first day of employment and free from Tuberculosis
  • The ability to obtain CPR/FA training within 60 days of hire and maintain a current certification
  • The ability to meet physical requirements for position
  • The ability to pass a drug test

Responsibilities

  • Performs daily tasks, including checking vital signs and weighing residents, as set forth by the Lead RMA, Nursing Supervisor, DON, Unit Coordinator, Administrator or Designee and cooperate fully with all staff in the best interest of the residents and to act as a team member in all areas
  • Is knowledgeable of the individualized care plan for residents and provides support to the residents according to their care plan
  • Contributes to the care planning process by providing the care planning staff with specific information and observations of the residents’ needs and preferences
  • Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with residents, visitors, families, peers and supervisors
  • Provides resident supervision and/or assistance with activities of daily living, (ADLs): bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, incontinent care, transferring, feeding, communication, ambulation, and documents ADLs provided by employee
  • Assists with meal service and clean up process
  • Encourages and documents daily nutritional intake
  • Assists with obtaining vital signs and weights for residents
  • Is responsible for promptly reporting to Lead RMA, Nursing Supervisor, DON, Administrator or Designee incidents or evidence of resident abuse or violation of residents’ rights
  • Maintains the comfort, privacy and dignity of residents in the delivery of services to them
  • Interacts with residents in a manner that displays warmth and promotes a caring, homelike environment
  • Maintains confidentiality about all aspects of residents
  • Answers residents’ call bells promptly and courteously
  • Provides support in any area that may arise that is above and beyond the normal expectations for this position
  • Assists in maintaining a safe, neat and clean environment; reports environmental deficiencies to the appropriate staff person such as lighting or equipment problems
  • Protects the personal belongings of each resident, including eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, furnishings, jewelry, clothing and memorabilia
  • Promptly reports missing items according to established policy and participates in efforts to locate missing items
  • Observes residents for changes in condition or behavior and promptly reports these changes to Lead RMA, Nursing Supervisor, DON, Unit Coordinator, Administrator or Designee
  • Provides care that maintains each resident’s skin integrity to prevent pressure ulcers, skin tears and other damage by changing incontinent residents, turning, repositioning immobile residents and by applying moisturizers to fragile skin and other areas
  • Participates in mandatory periodic training to enhance their skills and maintain the current trends in geriatric care
  • Provides basic First Aid and CPR when necessary and maintains current certification
  • Follows infection control policies & procedures
  • Follows all policies & procedures of Runk and Pratt
  • Maintains appropriate & respectful conduct within the workplace
