Dimensional Engineer

Vertex Sigma SoftwareFoster City, CA

About The Position

The Dimensional Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the dimensional integrity of automotive components and systems throughout the product development lifecycle. This role requires a strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and manufacturing processes to support programs from concept through production launch. The engineer will work cross-functionally to define robust dimensional requirements, perform root cause analysis, and ensure alignment with quality and manufacturing targets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7-8 years of experience in dimensional engineering, tolerance analysis, or geometric integration within automotive or other high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) with demonstrated application on production-intent designs.
  • Hands-on experience with 1D/3D tolerance analysis tools, such as 3DCS.
  • Proven experience supporting programs from concept through production launch, including detailed design, DV, PV, and SOP.
  • Ability to interpret CAD models, engineering drawings, and build strategies to define robust dimensional requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience working cross-functionally with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Suppliers.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including dimensional root cause analysis and corrective action development.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical requirements, risks, and trade-offs to diverse stakeholders.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing process capability and material-driven tolerances across common automotive components, including: Stampings (steel and aluminum), Castings (HPDC, LPDC, sand), Injection-molded plastics, Extrusions.
  • Ability to translate material behavior and process capability into realistic GD&T schemes and tolerance assumptions during design.
  • Experience assessing supplier manufacturing feasibility and tolerance capability during sourcing and design reviews.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an automotive OEM or Tier-1 supplier environment.
  • Experience owning or contributing to DVA / DVP / black-box tolerance models, including compliant (flexible) part modeling to represent real-world assembly behavior.
  • Hands-on experience modeling part compliance, locator strategies, and assembly sequence effects using 3D tolerance analysis tools (3DCS).
  • Ability to apply compliant modeling techniques to assess gap/flush, fit, and functional performance of flexible components such as stampings, plastic trims, seals, and closures.
  • Knowledge of fixture strategy, locating schemes, and build sequence development.

Responsibilities

  • Perform 1D/3D tolerance analysis using tools like 3DCS to ensure dimensional integrity.
  • Support programs from concept through production launch, including detailed design, DV, PV, and SOP.
  • Interpret CAD models, engineering drawings, and build strategies to define robust dimensional requirements.
  • Work cross-functionally with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Suppliers.
  • Conduct dimensional root cause analysis and develop corrective actions.
  • Communicate technical requirements, risks, and trade-offs to diverse stakeholders.
  • Translate material behavior and process capability into realistic GD&T schemes and tolerance assumptions.
  • Assess supplier manufacturing feasibility and tolerance capability during sourcing and design reviews.
  • Support closures, BIW, interior, or exterior systems.
  • Familiarity with craftsmanship targets, including flush, gap, and visual quality requirements.
  • Support low-volume programs or new product launch environments.
