Digital Signal Processing Researcher

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

The Sensor Technologies Group is seeking a creative digital signal processing (DSP) researcher to help theorize and build the next generation of sensing systems across multiple sensing modalities. In this position, you will work on pioneering research in DSP applications.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent, with a concentration in signal processing or another related discipline.
  • 5 or more years of relevant experience in development of signal processing algorithms and architectures.
  • Strong MATLAB and/or Python programming experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in conveying complex signal processing concepts to a broad audience.
  • Experience working with data from real-world systems and an understanding of how non-idealities of these systems impact signal processing algorithm design.
  • The ability to travel up to 10% of the time as needed.
  • Hold an active Secret security level clearance by and can ultimately obtain a TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • At least 8 years of experience applying and implementing DSP techniques in military systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with signal processing techniques in electronic warfare and remote sensing, including space-time adaptive processing, waveform design, electronic attack techniques and.
  • Expertise in applying mathematical optimization theory to DSP applications, specifically non-convex and non-linear optimization approaches over differentiable manifolds.
  • A proven track record of pursuing and receiving funding from internal and external research and development funding.
  • Experience leading teams with multi-faceted technical backgrounds to accomplish system performance objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Theorize and develop novel digital signal processing algorithms and approaches for a variety of applications, including waveform design and associated processing for remote sensing and electronic warfare (EW).
  • Be involved in research efforts focused on prototyping new concepts, including opportunities to serve as a principal investigator (PI) and technical lead.
  • Contribute to proposal efforts and technical planning for future capabilities and systems.
  • Engage in opportunities to translate your research into whitepapers, conference talks, journal articles, or other internal or external publications.
