About The Position

The University of Virginia’s media relations team, part of the Office of University Communications, is seeking a detail-oriented student to lead the production cycle of its twice-weekly media newsletter, which reaches thousands of journalists. This role offers direct experience at the intersection of legacy and emerging media, focusing on the evolving nature of university media relations in the digital era. The position involves owning the creation and execution of the newsletter, including refining its design and delivery, supporting strategic email list management, and subscriber development. This internship is ideal for someone who enjoys process refinement and consistent delivery, with a passion for high-quality execution, strategic email communications, audience growth, and understanding digital content engagement. The intern will join a dedicated Earned Media Team focused on harnessing strategic media coverage to benefit the public and elevate UVA experts, supporting UVA's role as a public institution.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Virginia.
  • Passionate long-term interest in the mission of public universities and how that mission intersects with public relations, digital marketing, communications, and the role of journalism in our society’s health and vibrance.
  • Dedicated to execution. Demonstrated track record of drawing energy from the work of regular production cycles.
  • Basic proficiency or ability to learn email marketing software (Marketing Cloud, MailChimp, etc.)
  • Committed collaborator who gravitates toward team settings.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with email marketing platforms (Marketing Cloud, Mailchimp, etc.)
  • Experience creating newsletters, editorial content, or strategic messaging for varying audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and distribute the twice-weekly UVA Media Advisory newsletter, including drafting, editing, formatting, and quality assurance.
  • Maintain and improve the health of our media contact listserv by researching, adding, organizing, and removing contacts as needed.
  • Monitor engagement trends and recommend ideas to improve newsletter performance and user experience.
  • Brainstorm and test creative ways to make content easier for journalists to scan, discover relevant stories, and connect with our team for interview opportunities.
  • Work across a broad array of UVA experts and topic areas.
  • Contribute to University Communications’ broader overall strategy and content.
