About The Position

The Digital Evidence Technician does evidence intake and the duplication of digital evidence, for the States Attorneys Office.

Requirements

  • Technological undergraduate or graduate level classes taken or documented experience in the technological environment with a strong aptitude for technology
  • The candidate must be organized with high attention to detail, while having the ability to multi-task.
  • Candidate must have strong computer skills and be willing to and expected to successfully complete advanced computer training for specific digital evidence related tasks
  • The candidate must be able to accomplish job assignments within reasonable deadlines and be willing to accept new projects and/or commitments
  • The candidate must be open to changes in operational procedures, technology, and/or organizational structure
  • The candidate must also be equipped to handle changes in work priorities and/or unexpected circumstances or situations
  • The candidate must be able to lift at least 50lbs and have the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
  • Candidate must have a valid drivers license

Nice To Haves

  • Undergraduate BA/MS or associate degree and/or cyber experience
  • Working knowledge of the Illinois State Statute on the preservation of evidence.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards pertaining to best practices for the preservation and retention of evidence or property

Responsibilities

  • Receive, catalog and securely store digital evidence.
  • Duplicate digital evidence for discovery requirements, legal proceedings, and investigations and/or shared from other law enforcement digital storage solutions. Digital evidence may include but is not limited to: Computer forensic images, external media images, surveillance videos, law enforcement portable audio and video devices, mobile device extractions, social media content, internet service provider records and third-party provided data
  • Generate or verify provided digital signatures or hash values for validation of data integrity
  • Support migration of digital evidence into digital evidence management system while ensuring data integrity (hash match)
  • Support prosecutors and investigators with digital technical requests regarding accessing, organization, and sharing of digital evidence
  • Provide testimony as required regarding the digital evidence data integrity and/or expert testimony if applicable
  • Maintain assigned special purpose computer systems and software updates as required
  • Maintain computer/technological proficiency regarding applicable technology by training and industry networking
  • Receive and store evidence and property in any of the CCSAO vaults.
  • Exercise proper physical security measures over evidence, including maintaining chain of custody for evidence
  • Ensure that all property and evidence have appropriate documentation and identification
  • Perform data entry and maintain accuracy of the evidence records system
  • Use of county applications or automated systems to research inventoried evidence (Crimes; CCC Portal; I-Clear, LEADS)
  • Research inventoried evidence for appropriate dispositions (Impound; Disposal; Permanent Retention; Return to Owner)
  • Comply with related policies, procedures, and work rules to maintain system security and data integrity
  • Conduct daily location audits of property and evidence
  • Dispose of property as need or required by law/court order/etc
  • Interaction with States Attorneys Office Employees and various outside agencies
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as needed or required
