About The Position

Mashable is seeking a digital culture associate editor with a deep understanding of online trends, the latest tech hardware and software, content creators, and creator culture. The role involves tracking TikTok trends, analyzing the influencer economy, exploring new internet subcultures, and understanding how creators shape the online world. The ideal candidate will be adept at writing and editing news hits quickly and cleanly, spotting trends (especially on social media), and creating/editing content in various formats, including video. A strong knowledge of pop culture and current events is essential. Familiarity with the tech and tools creators use for social engagement, such as phones, laptops, video editing software, and project management apps, is also important. The candidate should have an active social media presence, know how to grow one, and understand which platforms and individuals are most influential in digital culture. They will also contribute to Mashable's content strategy for social platforms and community building.

Requirements

2+ years as a digital culture reporter or editor
Ability to multitask and meet deadlines
Strong communication skills
Knowledge of the digital space and Mashable's core coverage areas
Understand audience listening, including using trending, engagement and historical audience data to inform story pitches
Deep familiarity with online trends, the latest tech hardware and software, content creators and creator culture
Obsessed with digital culture—tracking the latest TikTok trends, decoding the influencer economy, following the rise of new internet subcultures, and exploring how creators are shaping the online world
Ability to quickly and cleanly write and edit news hits
Ability to spot trends, especially on social
Ability to create and edit content in a variety of formats, including video
Knowledge of pop culture and current events
Familiarity with the tech and tools creators are using to connect in social spaces – from phones and laptops to video editing software and project management apps
Active social media presence and knowledge of how to grow one
Knowledge of which platforms and people are having the most impact in digital culture
Ability to help Mashable develop and execute content strategy that amplifies our journalism on social platforms and build engaged communities
Obsessed with the internet and social media, content creators, and Gen-Z trends
Up to date on the latest tech releases, from iPhones to Teslas and AI chatbots
Detail-oriented writer and editor who can generate compelling story ideas, work with reporters to shape them, and understands the magic of a good headline
Self-starter and organized professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and will help support newsroom operations including scheduling and team communications
Team player who values the success of their coworkers and Mashable as a whole
Well-versed in SEO and in supporting content strategy on a variety of social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and whatever else comes next
Willing to chat about the day’s events and find interesting angles and stories to cover
Top-notch writer with a firm grasp of AP style and the ability to quickly turn around clean copy

Responsibilities

Write news hits, evergreen utilities, consumer tech-focused content and features
Write about the creator economy and the creators who are driving social trends
Be comfortable brand-building and promoting Mashable content on social
Write about phones, apps, and other products and developments in tech spaces with a conversational and engaging tone
Proactively pitch stories, and always be looking for reliable sources and interesting angles on fresh, tech- and digital culture-related topics
Help elevate the quality of our journalism with forward-looking enterprise and original content
Engage audiences with our journalism via social platforms
Review and write about new products and software releases (inclusive of affiliate linking)
Be prepared to research and familiarize yourself with new subject matter in order to pivot with daily coverage needs
Write content around deals on products (inclusive of affiliate linking)
