About The Position

The California Teachers Association (CTA) is one of California’s largest and most dynamic labor unions. In-depth knowledge of and experience with labor movement communications, union organizing and contract campaigns; an ability to inspire union members, staff, and communities to support CTA goals; and a deep commitment to the labor movement and public education are paramount to this role. The Digital Communications Organizer will be responsible for creating and curating engaging content across various digital platforms to support CTA's mission and initiatives, with a strong emphasis on video production, editing and storytelling. This role requires expert videography and post-production skills, excellent storytelling skills and a demonstrated ability to apply digital organizing principles to engage and mobilize target audiences in a campaign setting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in film/video production, communications, journalism, marketing, design or a related field preferred.
  • Proven experience in video production and content creation in a campaign setting. Labor movement communications work strongly preferred.
  • A portfolio or reel demonstrating professional production values, strong storytelling and a range of video formats.
  • Expert videography skills, including camera operation, lens selection, lighting for interviews and field production, and location audio capture.
  • Demonstrated experience managing all phases of video production, from pre-production planning through field production and post-production, and carrying a project from creative brief to final delivery.
  • Expert proficiency in professional video editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or equivalent), including color grading and audio mixing.
  • Proficiency in motion graphics software (Adobe After Effects or equivalent), including kinetic typography, animated data visualization and template-based content for projects without original footage.
  • Experience producing short-form vertical video for platforms including Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
  • Strong interviewing skills with a demonstrated ability to put subjects at ease and draw out authentic, compelling stories on camera.
  • Working knowledge of video production standards and practices including music licensing, stock footage usage, appearance releases and captioning for accessibility.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with proven ability to create persuasive, action-oriented content for diverse audiences including members, media and the general public.
  • Strong visual communication skills and a demonstrated ability to create engaging visual content.
  • Experience with photography, graphic design principles and proficiency in graphic design applications.
  • Experience leveraging data and research to inform content creation strategies and optimize content for audience engagement and campaign performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze digital campaign performance data and translate insights into actionable strategies and tactics.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Highly organized with proven ability to drive and manage complex projects, timelines and calendars across large organizational structures.
  • Deep understanding of the issues and problems facing public education and unions in California.
  • Excellent communication skills, initiative and creativity.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with staff, leaders, members and the public.
  • Adaptable and flexible. Able to adjust seamlessly and effectively to changing factors and conditions that impact CTA campaigns, projects and other union programs.
  • Experience developing and implementing comprehensive crisis response systems. Ability to work in fast-paced situations, including contract campaigns, strikes and political campaigns, and crisis communication.
  • Demonstrated support for racial, social, and economic justice; worker's rights; and a well-funded public education system.
  • Computer proficiency and the ability to learn and use the Association's software programs.
  • Ability to work and travel regularly, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive video and digital organizing strategies to engage CTA members, the public and key stakeholders.
  • Produce video content from concept through final delivery, including scripting, storyboarding, interviewing, camera operation, lighting and location audio.
  • Perform all post-production including editing, color grading, audio mixing, motion graphics and captioning to deliver finished, accessible video in platform-ready formats for CTA's social media channels, website, email campaigns, paid digital programs and other platforms.
  • Produce rapid response video coverage including strikes, contract campaigns, political campaigns, events and breaking news.
  • Develop and maintain motion graphics packages, templates and brand standards that ensure visual consistency across CTA's video output.
  • Use visual storytelling techniques to highlight the work of CTA members and the challenges facing public education.
  • Create high-quality written, visual and multimedia content including compelling graphics, videos and other assets for CTA's social media channels, website, email campaigns and other digital platforms to support programs and initiatives.
  • Assist in managing CTA's social media presence, including publishing content and engaging in online conversations about education and labor issues.
  • Manage CTA's video footage library within the digital asset management system, including organization, archiving and metadata standards.
  • Maintain video equipment and field production kits and recommend equipment and software purchases.
  • Collaborate across CTA departments to coordinate content development and distribution while ensuring messaging alignment and brand consistency across all platforms.
  • Work with regional communications organizers and local chapters to develop and implement digital strategies for organizing and advocacy campaigns.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of online events and webinars to educate and engage CTA members and the public.
  • Provide training and support to CTA members and staff on video capture, storytelling and production best practices.
  • Identify and manage relationships with vendors for digital media production, design, and technology services.
  • Lead and manage various digital projects for CTA, from concept to execution, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Research and pilot emerging digital technologies and best practices to enhance CTA's communication and organizing effectiveness.
  • Analyze digital performance, identify challenges and improvement opportunities, and collaborate with teams to develop and implement solutions that optimize engagement and improve organizational processes.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive digital strategy to enhance membership engagement, recruitment, and retention across all digital platforms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
