Digital Color Technician

Varsity BrandsIndianapolis, IN
Onsite

About The Position

The Digital Color Technician supports consistent, accurate, and repeatable digital color output across internal production locations. This role executes device calibration, linearization, profiling, measurement, validation, and troubleshooting activities; maintains color standards, libraries, and technical documentation; and partners with Production, Prepress, Quality, Continuous Improvement, and equipment or material vendors to resolve issues and improve performance. The technician helps ensure that color workflows are production-ready, scalable, and aligned with customer and brand expectations.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of color theory, color spaces, ICC profiling, rendering intents, linearization, calibration, and digital print quality evaluation.
  • Hands-on experience with digital print technologies, RIP software, spectrophotometers, densitometers, and color-management or profiling tools.
  • Ability to interpret color measurements, identify trends and variation, and translate findings into practical production actions.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with disciplined documentation and follow-through.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to operators, production leaders, prepress teams, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently in a production environment while partnering effectively across multiple functions and locations.
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Communications, Printing Technology, Color Science, Imaging Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-5 years of experience in digital printing, color management, prepress, print quality, or a related production environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Pantone matching, custom brand-color standards, substrates, inks, and decorated-apparel or wide-format print workflows is preferred.
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement methods and performance measures such as first-pass yield, rework, waste, and color difference is preferred.
  • Experience with RIP platforms such as EFI Fiery, Caldera, ONYX, or similar tools is preferred.
  • Experience supporting multiple production locations, apparel decoration, sublimation, direct-to-garment, direct-to-film, or other digital print processes is preferred.
  • Industry color-management or print-certification credentials are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and maintain linearization, calibration, profiling, and verification routines for digital print devices, proofing systems, monitors, and related equipment in accordance with defined standards and tolerances.
  • Use spectrophotometers, densitometers, and color-management software to measure output, evaluate color difference, document results, and confirm that devices and materials meet established acceptance criteria.
  • Maintain ICC profiles, RIP settings, rendering intents, Pantone references, custom brand colors, substrates, ink sets, and other color-control assets to support consistent production across locations.
  • Troubleshoot routine color variation and print-quality issues, support root-cause analysis, document corrective actions, and escalate complex equipment, material, file, or process concerns to the appropriate technical partners.
  • Partner with print operators, prepress, art, and production teams to confirm that files, proofs, equipment settings, and production conditions are color-correct and ready for execution.
  • Support test prints, material and ink evaluations, equipment trials, pilot runs, and validation of new tools or workflows before broader production implementation.
  • Reinforce common color-management procedures and verification routines across internal print operations; identify location-to-location variation and support actions that improve repeatability and consistency.
  • Track and report color-performance measures such as color difference, first-pass yield, rework, waste, calibration compliance, and recurring defect trends; provide data that supports prioritization and continuous improvement.
  • Create and maintain color-management SOPs, equipment profiles, troubleshooting guides, validation records, and other technical documentation for reliable execution and knowledge transfer.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance to operators and production teams, assist with training on color best practices and measurement tools, and reinforce adherence to approved workflows and standards.
  • Coordinate with equipment, software, ink, substrate, and service vendors as needed to resolve issues, evaluate capabilities, and support implementation of color-related technology and process improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned
