About The Position

The Digital Advocacy Manager supports Oceana's digital advocacy and fundraising efforts by driving supporter action and engagement across various digital channels including email, SMS, paid media, social media, and websites. This role involves crafting compelling, action-oriented digital content to advance campaign priorities and organizational initiatives, producing emails, text messages, action pages, and blogs. The manager ensures consistent messaging across channels, aligned with broader communications goals, and utilizes data and testing for continuous optimization of outreach, list health, and supporter engagement. The position also involves collaboration with U.S. campaign teams, the digital team, and Oceana's international offices to support cross-channel digital strategy and global supporter growth. The role is based in Washington, D.C., with potential for limited domestic travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in digital communications, marketing, journalism, or related field and 3-5 years of digital communications, digital organizing, or digital advocacy experience, with demonstrated expertise in email, SMS, and paid media, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience with digital advocacy/CRM platforms such as EveryAction, Engaging Networks, Action Network, or similar platform.
  • Proven track record of writing effective, action-driving digital content.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft persuasive, on-brand copy across email, SMS, social, and web.
  • Comfortable editing HTML and CSS.
  • Comfort working with data: pulling reports, interpreting engagement metrics, and using insights to inform strategy.
  • Experience with A/B testing, segmentation, and list health best practices.
  • A genuine passion for advocacy and connecting with supporters online.
  • Experience with paid media, including using it to generate new leads and drive advocacy actions.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Ability to synthesize complex information quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure while maintaining a positive, collaborative attitude.
  • Ability to take initiative in suggesting ways to improve digital strategy and performance.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with SEO/GEO and content strategy a plus.
  • Familiarity with environmental and ocean conservation issues is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with U.S. communication and campaign teams to advance legislative efforts, producing emails, text messages, action pages, and blogs.
  • Ensure messaging is cohesive across channels, aligned with Oceana's communications goals, and supports action and advocacy targets.
  • Work closely with the social media team to drive actions and advocacy engagement across social channels.
  • Support the integration of advocacy work into Oceana's broader digital engagement strategy, working closely with the direct response fundraising team to help move supporters up the ladder of engagement from action-taking to giving.
  • Support Oceana's country offices in developing their digital fundraising and advocacy programs, including sharing best practices on email list health and growth, campaign actions, and website performance.
  • Regularly evaluate performance using engagement metrics, segmentation, and A/B testing to optimize outreach and list health.
  • Support paid acquisition strategies with data-informed recommendations.
  • Establish benchmarks, monitor engagement, and produce regular analytics reports on digital campaigns, website performance, and advocacy participation.
  • Report on advocacy and digital campaign performance to internal stakeholders, translating data into clear takeaways and recommendations.
  • Support U.S. field staff on the execution of state-specific campaigns, helping tailor digital content and tactics to local priorities and audiences.
  • Support the ongoing engagement of Oceana's Wavemaker community, including supporting the design of our annual town hall event, responding to supporter emails, texts, and phone call inquiries, and thinking holistically about the supporter experience with Oceana across all touchpoints.
  • Stay informed on digital trends and platform updates, adapting strategies to maximize engagement and performance.
  • Actively contribute to team brainstorms and collaborate across channels to align email, SMS, and website initiatives.
  • Serve as a supportive team member within the digital team, contributing ideas and inspiring colleagues.
  • Assist in accomplishing digital and communications goals as needed or requested by supervisor.
  • Perform additional duties as needed and/or assigned.
