About The Position

The registered dietitian (RD) per diem, collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to provide general nutrition care that is integrated with overall goals of care for adult and/or pediatric patients at risk for nutrition problems in inpatient and outpatient settings. The RD in this classification works in inpatient or outpatient pediatric and adult settings to provide nutrition care for patients with a wide range of clinical problems. Primary responsibilities include nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention and evaluating clinical outcomes; coordination of daily work for dietetic technician(s) (DTR) assigned to area; participation in compliance, department projects, and quality performance improvement efforts; active involvement on interdisciplinary teams and committees; and contributions to the supervision of dietetic interns, and teaching assigned classes. The RD maintains professional competence and continuing education per regulatory requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university
• Successful completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice experience, approved or accredited by Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). A majority of the clinical training must have taken place in a large teaching hospital.
• Registered Dietitian (RD) or eligible to sit for the RD registration examination and passes exam within 6 months of completing ACEND-accredited supervised practice program. An RD-eligible employee works under the direct supervision of an RD.
• Registered Dietitian (RD) at time of hire or within 6 months of hire

Responsibilities

• Provides nutrition care according to UCSF standards of care and UCSF policies and procedures; Assesses nutritional status, plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates specialized nutrition care for patients with complex nutritional and medical diagnoses in assigned areas; Integrates nutrition care with other for forms of care being provided to patient; Provides nutrition education and counseling for patients and families; Documents care in patient medical record and department recordkeeping systems using computers for daily tasks and communication Participates as a member of patient care team Maintains oversight of DTR clinical work; Attends and contributes to team meetings, rounds and other care coordination activities as applicable to assigned work areas; Coordinates nutrition services with California Children’s Services for patients covered by CCS.
• Participates on multidisciplinary team, division, and department committees & projects; Participates in in-services and nutrition education for department and/or other clinicians.
• Acts as preceptor for intern learning experiences; Evaluates intern performance, and works with Internship Coordinator/Director to address areas of intern performance that need improvement; Develops learning activities for interns assigned to unit; Teaches intern classes as assigned.
• Evaluates own performance, and plans and implements a program of self- development based on identified needs, interests and/or limitations; Evaluates information learned and applies to work environment, as appropriate; Participates in advancing the competence of others.
