Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Dietetics, nutrition or related field.
  • Registered Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Licensed through the State of Louisiana Board of Examiners in Dietetics and Nutrition.
  • Requires good oral/written communication skills.
  • Must exhibit professionalism, respect therapeutic boundaries, have cultural competency, as well as self-motivation and self-awareness.
  • Experience working on intra-disciplinary team consisting of medical and mental health providers.
  • Knowledge of nutrition related labs needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced experience with and interest in the treatment of eating disorders, weight management, Endocrine disorders, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Maintains continuing education hours as outlined by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • 3 years Clinical dietetics experience preferred.
  • Additional specialty training related to assigned clinical area preferred.
  • Specialty certification is required within 3 years of hire.
  • Inpatient and outpatient dietary management preferred.
  • Availability for cross coverage between units for continuum care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of nutrition and counseling practices.
  • Complete individual personalized nutritional assessments and coordinate on-going nutritional care in recovery.
  • Provide nutritional counseling education for clients and/or their families.
  • Participate in care coordination and treatment planning.
  • Assist in meal planning and preparation for client meetings.
  • Lead and facilitate group nutrition classes on assigned topics.
  • Communicate compassionately, effectively and enthusiastically with clients and/or families.
  • Develop and maintain nutrition education materials and clinical procedures up to date with current research and practice.
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills with a working knowledge of various software programs and electronic medical record charting.
  • Complete assessments, screens, and follow-ups in a thorough and comprehensive manner, in accordance with departmental and professional standards of care, including diet/intake histories, lab values, patient disease knowledge, drug-nutrient interactions and recommendations.
  • Educate patients in a thorough and effective manner.
  • Communicate and monitor implementation of the nutritional care plan with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Assist with discharge planning on inpatients.
  • Participate in health care team conferences and rounds assigned.
  • Maintain age and disease-specific clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Assist diet office with menu options if needed, specifically for patients with special diets and food allergies.
  • Communicate with the Dietary staff regarding pertinent patient care, departmental performance and organizational issues as needed.
  • Initiate diet and laboratory orders within scope.
  • Maintain up-to-date patient education materials for the assigned areas. Update and/or develop education materials as needed.
  • Serve on hospital committees as needed and requested.
  • Actively participate in QAPI projects as requested.
  • Participate in collaboration of care and marketing to area providers.
  • Utilize technology effectively and efficiently for scheduling, communications, and record keeping.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete documentation in a timely manner.
  • Participate in social media and web campaigns, advertising, and promotion.
  • Using evidence-based weight-inclusive practices, conduct nutrition assessments, interventions, and follow-up in a patient-centered manner for patients referred by area providers.
  • Collaborate with a team of providers, dietitians and Psychologists.
  • Participate in case conferences with interdisciplinary teams for patient care (mental health, primary care, etc).
  • Provide support for diabetes and nutrition group education programs, and in some cases develop, maintain, and conduct group education programs.
  • Utilize motivational interviewing (MI) skills to support patients in a patient-centered manner.
