About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Food & Nutrition is seeking a Dietetic Clerk to provide assistance to the dietitian and nutrition-related support to patients. This role involves directing the work of service assistants for specific patient areas and educating patients and/or significant others on designated diets. The Dietetic Clerk will exercise responsible judgment in routine and emergency situations, meet deadlines, and efficiently use personal computers and various software. Duties include completing or assisting patients with special selective menus, developing patterns for special diets, instructing patients on less complicated diet prescriptions, and assisting the clinical dietitian with more complex cases. The clerk will also review patient charts for nutritional assessments, calculate 3-day food records, and make appropriate notes in medical records. Additionally, the role involves managing office supplies inventory and ensuring timely and accurate completion of charting and menu packets.

Requirements

  • Completion of an American Dietetic Association certified Dietetic Technician program (two-year course), or Two years post high school education including at least one post high school course in nutrition.
  • Up to 20 months of experience in direct patient food services may be substituted for post high school education for those who have successfully completed one post high school course in nutrition.
  • Resume that clearly addresses how they meet the listed required and desired qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to the dietitian and nutrition-related support to patients.
  • Direct the work of service assistants for specific patient areas.
  • Educate patients and/or significant others on designated diets.
  • Exercise responsible judgment in routine and emergency situations.
  • Meet deadlines.
  • Efficient use of personal computers, computer terminals and a variety of software and/or conventional office equipment.
  • Complete or assist patients in completing special selective menus, checking for compliance with dietary prescription frequently without review.
  • Develop patterns for special diets according to the dietary prescription.
  • Instruct patients and/or significant others on less complicated diet prescriptions and assist the clinical dietitian with the remainder.
  • Review patient charts to assist clinical dietitian in nutritional assessment of patients.
  • Calculate 3-day food records and nutrient intakes and record in medical record.
  • Make notes in medical records as appropriate to his/her responsibility, or as directed by the dietitian.
  • Manage the office, maintaining the inventory of supplies and ensuring that time-sensitive charting and completion of menu packets are done accurately and within necessary time constraints.
