About The Position

This position involves performing a wide variety of duties related to the inspection, maintenance, and repair of diesel trucks and motorized equipment. The role requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, with assignments issued by a superior and work methods subject to approval. All work is reviewed upon completion for satisfactory results and may be inspected for technical conformity.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment, and methods employed in diesel truck and motorized equipment repair and adjustments.
  • Ability to locate and correct mechanical defects in diesel trucks and motorized equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment employed in the repair of diesel trucks and motorized equipment.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of tasks in the repair or rebuilding of motorized equipment without detailed instructions or close supervision.
  • Capacity to perform work while exposed to extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting as assignments require.
  • Knowledgeable exercise of safety precautions and common prudence as applied to work performance in roadway settings, materials and fuels handling and storage, and equipment operation.
  • Graduation from a senior high school or a recognized GED equivalency.
  • Completion of a vocational or trade school course in the field of diesel truck repair and maintenance.
  • Employment as a general diesel mechanic for a construction company, trucking fleet operation, or provider of diesel truck equipment repair services, or any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above.
  • Must possess and maintain at least a valid Rhode Island Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with airbrakes endorsement.
  • Must be physically qualified by a physician’s certificate at the time of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair automobiles, trucks, tractors, snowplows, hydraulic equipment, road maintenance machinery, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Inspect, adjust, repair, rebuild, and replace components such as transmissions, diesel engines, main bearing assemblies, steering assemblies, front and rear axles, differentials, air and hydraulic braking systems, magnetos, carburetors, starters, generators, and distributors.
  • Perform tasks including refacing, reseating, and grinding valves; honing cylinders; replacing bushings, bearings, and gaskets; timing motors; aligning front wheels; relining brakes; and inspecting and repairing alternator systems.
  • Conduct automotive body, radiator, electrical, and battery work that does not require a specialist.
  • Adjust and repair sanding equipment.
  • Perform simple welding tasks; adjust and repair truck bodies and lifts.
  • Repair tools and garage equipment.
  • Perform urgent and emergency repairs on the road.
  • Operate a snowplow, truck, or other equipment in urgent or emergency situations.
  • Study the construction, operation, and maintenance requirements of newly acquired trucks, equipment, and passenger car models.
  • Test and troubleshoot hydraulic systems using meters and gate valves.
  • Adjust and repair hydraulic valves, fabricate hydraulic hoses, and test hydraulic pumps and motors.
  • Generate appropriate documentation for work orders from initiation to completion, both in-house and for the general marketplace.
  • Review invoice documents for work performed by private sector sources for appropriateness, work scope, and accuracy.
