About The Position

This position is responsible for performing repairs and diagnoses on diesel engines, power trains, electrical systems, HVAC systems, steering systems, electronics, engine bolt-on items, brake systems, and suspension systems. The role involves performing preventive maintenance, reconditioning equipment, and ensuring compliance with DOT standards. The mechanic will also mentor other technicians and assist with fleet analyses. The job requires working in non-climate-controlled conditions and potentially traveling for training. Mechanics are expected to have their own tools.

Requirements

  • 4 years practical experience with tractor trailer maintenance required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proficiency in the use of all tools of trade (including welding equipment, diagnostic equipment, hand and power tools) required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Ability to work in non-climate-controlled conditions required.
  • Must have own tools (hand and pneumatic) sufficient to do any job that is required.
  • Must be able to communicate in English, both verbally and written, and can read and understand English.

Nice To Haves

  • Expert understanding of fleet maintenance policies, DOT standards and industry practices.
  • Organized with the ability to deal with multiple activities in a fast-paced environment.

  • OEM training courses required (FRTL or INTL).
  • ASE Certification preferred.
  • 608/609 certifications preferred.
  • Clean MVR required.
  • Able to operate service truck preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to recommend continuous improvement ideas and actions.
  • Results orientated with the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all safety and best practices and follow company Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the repair and diagnosis of diesel engines, power train (differentials, transmissions, clutches, drive shafts, wheel ends), electrical systems (starters, alternators, lights), HVAC systems, steering systems, electronics (ECM's, ECU's, sensors), engine bolt-on items (turbos, fan clutches, cooling system), brake systems (ABS & air disk brakes), suspension systems (spring and air), and after treatment devices (DPF and DOC).
  • Perform electrical system repairs, cooling system maintenance, and complete vehicle diagnosis.
  • Perform all levels of preventive maintenance services on truck and trailing equipment.
  • Perform mechanical and general appearance reconditioning of equipment for "trade-ins" and prepare new equipment for delivery.
  • Successfully demonstrate welding skills (mig, tig) in non-standard situations and on varying materials (AU and steel).
  • Perform advanced diagnostics on Detroit DD15 engines and DEF/after treatment repairs.
  • Proficiently use diagnostic software for Detroit DD15 engines and DEF/after treatment repairs.
  • Identify and perform warrantable repairs and document on repair order.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, jacks, and hoists.
  • Maintain work area appearance and safety.
  • Road test vehicles to diagnose malfunctions or ensure proper operation.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test instruments.
  • Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
  • Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
  • Specialize in repairing and troubleshooting of major components such as engine, transmissions, differentials, and fifth wheels, including replacing complete assemblies and turbochargers.
  • Provide directions and repair instructions and mentor other technicians.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT standards and properly document work completed.
  • Enter and process all transactions within the maintenance system.
  • Assist with fleet analyses, action development, and stances.
  • Complete or assist with miscellaneous projects as assigned.
