About The Position

First Student is hiring a Diesel Technician to support our operation serving New Haven Public Schools. While First Student is North America’s leading school transportation provider—serving more than 1,250 school districts and completing over 5 million student journeys every day—our focus in New Haven is local. You’ll join a dedicated maintenance team committed to safety, teamwork, and delivering dependable transportation for students throughout the community. As a Diesel Technician, you will help maintain and repair a fleet of school buses to ensure the highest levels of safety, reliability, and performance.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of diesel or automotive maintenance and repair experience, or equivalent combination of technical school education and hands-on experience
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities
  • Experience performing preventative maintenance and major mechanical repairs
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • CDL Class B or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment (company-paid training provided)
  • Possession of a mechanic’s tool set required
  • Strong computer skills
  • Willingness to participate in the ASE certification program
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced maintenance environment

  • Heavy-duty diesel repair experience
  • School bus, fleet, truck, or commercial vehicle maintenance experience
  • ASE certifications
  • Air brake and electrical diagnostic experience

Responsibilities

  • Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe for our passengers
  • Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle maintenance and repair
  • Repair and inspect brake systems
  • Perform engine diagnostics, tune-ups, and repairs
  • Repair suspension, steering, drivetrain, and transmission components
  • Complete preventative maintenance (PM) services
  • Perform annual inspections and safety inspections
  • Accurately complete work orders and maintenance documentation
  • Assist with mobile emergency repair services when needed
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
