About The Position

The City of Williston is seeking to hire a Diesel Mechanic to serve the Williston Fire Department. This role is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of all Fire Department vehicles, equipment, and ground support equipment. The work involves preventative maintenance, diagnostics, emergency repairs, and recordkeeping to ensure compliance with department requirements.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid ND Driver’s License, or ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1-3 years of experience as a diesel mechanic or automotive mechanic.
  • 1-3 years of experience of facilities maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge and ability to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to gather, analyze and distribute data required.
  • Ability to perform the duties of this classification.
  • Prior work experience in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicle and/or heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and small engine systems.
  • Individual must be willing and able to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, & holidays.
  • Ability to work in and support a teamwork environment.
  • Strong computer skills with ability to effectively utilize programs such as the Microsoft suite with ability to learn new programs introduced in the future.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business documents, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, employees, and the public.

  • Regular communication with Fire Department personnel, other City of Williston departments and employees, third parties, outside representatives, community members and groups, as needed.
  • Regular use of technology and equipment for job-related functions will be required including but not limited to computers, phones, printers and equipment pertaining to fire prevention, suppression and pre-hospital emergency medical care.
  • Standing in work areas, walking between work areas, and driving to various locations will be required.
  • There will be a regular expectation to pull, push, reach, walk, stand, sit, crawl, kneel, bend and have the use of hands and fingers, use of both eyes for sight, including ability to distinguish color and distance, hearing, extensive use of arms and legs to climb on top of, under, in and around equipment and facilities; work in proximity and use of computer screens; verbally communicating and moving objects.
  • The employee must be able to physically move, lift, carry and manipulate up to 100 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to fleet and facility maintenance requests.
  • Coordinate, monitor, and perform preventive, predictive and proactive maintenance and repairs of department apparatus and facilities.
  • Perform engine, hydraulic, electrical, brake, suspension, and drivetrain repairs as required.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and conduct emergency repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and software.
  • Determine vehicle, facility, and equipment condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests, identifying worn and damaged parts for repairs.
  • Perform tests and inspect vehicles and equipment prior to and following repairs, while maintaining records of services performed and parts installed.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Keep maintenance shop and equipment functional, clean, safe, and organized.
  • Perform snow removal at the City of Williston Fire Department facilities as necessary or required.
  • Provide training/instruction to fire and EMS staff on preventative maintenance, reporting requirements, vehicle failure, and general apparatus operations.
  • Participate in internal and external working groups to coordinate maintenance efforts.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Be physically present in attendance at the worksite.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
