We are seeking a Diesel Engine Shop Support Technician to provide support at Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) Product Family located in San Diego, CA. This Diesel Engine Shop Support Technician will be responsible for assessments, inspection, disassembling, repair, overhaul, reassemble, and test components of USN shipboard main and electric power diesel engines utilizing technical documentation and NAVSEA drawings.

Requirements

  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience.
  • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
  • Must be physically able to climb and work on ships in an industrial environment.
  • Must be able to read and interpret equipment and systems, ship drawings and ship technical documents and manuals.
  • Must have the ability to inspect, disassemble, repair, overhaul, reassemble, and test marine diesel engines and oily‑waste‑separator systems using specialized shop equipment and precision tools.
  • Must be able to complete OHSA 10 course, low speed vehicle training (for operation of carts), and completion of PQS 301 Craftsman qualification within ninety (90) days.
  • May require forklift license depending on shop need – will require forklift physical.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CAC/DBIDS ID Base access and DoD Security Clearance.
  • Start date contingent upon approval of base access which is required for this position and continued employment.

Nice To Haves

  • A current, valid DoD confidential security clearance or higher.
  • Recent Marine Diesel Engine Technician experience.
  • Recent Oily Waste Separator systems experience
  • Prefer technical/professional certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Shall provide guidance on U.S. Navy shipboard main propulsion and electric power generation diesel engines and associated support equipment.
  • Conduct ship-checks to assist in determining scope of work and correct material selection in accordance with applicable NAVSEA drawing and other technical reference documents.
  • Shall utilize NAVSEA drawings/blueprints, technical manuals, APLs, vendor catalogs, and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) technical representatives to accurately identify and select the materials and repair parts required to accomplish repairs and overhauls to ship diesel engines.
  • Provide Journeyman-level support to assess, inspect, disassemble, repair, overhaul, reassemble, and test the components of the following diesel engines: Colt Pielstick, Model PC 2.5 Colt Pielstick, Model PA6B STC Caterpillar, Model 3512B General Motors, Model EMD 645E American Locomotive (ALCO), Model 251-C Isotta-Fraschini, Model 36SS6V MTU, Model 20V 8000 M90 Caterpillar, Model 3608
  • Utilize the following shop equipment to accomplish requirements: hydrostatic test stand; precision measuring equipment; Woodward Governor test machine; fuel oil injection pump test machine; fuel oil injection nozzle test machine; Chris Marine valve/valve seat grinder; Chris Marine cylinder honing machine; hydraulic cylinder head bolt stretching tool; manual and automatic parts washing machine; parts and blasting machine; hydraulic (HYTORC) torque wrenches; portable electrical, pneumatic, and hand tools; and Government owned vehicles, including fork lifts, and electric/gas vehicles and carts.
  • Provide Journeyman-level support to accomplish maintenance and repairs of shipboard oily waste separator systems, including 5-GPM Oily Waste Membrane System AAE, Model 740956.
  • Disassemble, inspect, repair/overhaul/replace, reassemble, and test oily waste separator system equipment and components including membranes.
