About The Position

This is a Motor Carrier Act Exempt position. As a Mechanic Apprentice at XPO, you will perform routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of heavy-duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment in compliance with manufacturer, DOT, and company schedules. You will apply knowledge and work according to DOT, EPA, Interstate Authority, OSHA, and other relevant rules and regulations. This role requires accessing all areas of equipment and vehicles for necessary maintenance, including working in, on, or under parts of vehicles and trailers. You will also repair or rebuild equipment systems, conduct safety inspections, and prepare safety documentation. A key responsibility includes moving trailers on the property by operating a hostler in all types of weather. You will enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activity, operate specialized tooling and vehicles, and ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and organized. Interaction with operations and shop management is also expected.

Requirements

  • 1 year of experience in tractor and trailer inspection and repair -OR- a technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Available to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, and weekends
  • Brake inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.25
  • Vehicle Inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.19
  • Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty trailer and tractor maintenance
  • Lift objects of various shapes, sizes, and weights frequently up to 50 lbs. And occasionally greater than 75 lbs.
  • Safely walk and stand for extended periods on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery, including working outdoors in inclement weather
  • Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent work-related or military experience
  • Previous or current ASE certifications
  • Diesel tech school diploma
  • Prior mechanical experience such as automotive or skilled trades
  • Basic computer skills
  • Basic welding skills such as Oxy/Acetylene, ARC and MIG

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge and work by DOT, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Interstate Authority, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other rules and regulations, as required
  • Access any area of the equipment or vehicle to perform necessary maintenance, including inspecting and performing work in, on or under parts of vehicles and trailers
  • Repair or rebuild equipment systems
  • Conduct safety inspections of equipment and prepare safety documentation
  • Move trailers throughout the property, operating a hostler in all types of weather
  • Enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activity
  • Operate specialized tooling and vehicles
  • Ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and organized
  • Interact with operations and shop management

  • Expected pay range: $28.27 to $30.81 per hour. Pay is on an annual step progression. Actual compensation may vary due to factors such as experience and skill set.
