About The Position

As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic with the Department of Transportation, you will help keep vital equipment safe and ready for use every day. This role offers a chance to work hands-on with many types of vehicles and machines that support transportation and public safety across the Commonwealth. This role centers on maintaining, repairing, and inspecting a wide range of vehicles and construction equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and it requires the Class B CDL to have the E removed.
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • Demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.

Nice To Haves

  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, cooling systems, and transmissions
  • Carry out routine inspections, diagnostics, tune ups, and system adjustments to keep equipment in safe working order
  • Complete official vehicle inspections, apply correct documentation, and road test equipment for safety compliance
  • Use diagnostic tools and procedures to identify equipment issues and determine proper repair methods
  • Maintain a clean work area, follow all safety procedures, and report injuries or equipment damage immediately
  • Assist other mechanics with major repairs and demonstrate repair techniques to coworkers
