Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines and assisting in maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI Activities, including patient satisfaction and process improvement. This role involves patient education, direct patient care during dialysis treatments, including monitoring, intervention, and documentation. Staff-related duties include participating in recruitment, assisting with clinical orientation and training, functioning as a preceptor for new staff, and conducting competency evaluations. Educational responsibilities include partnering with other staff to educate on water systems and environmental integrity, ensuring communication between management and staff regarding training programs, and participating in the design and implementation of educational initiatives. Maintenance duties involve ensuring a clean and safe environment, cleaning equipment, and preparing for dialysis treatments. Record keeping includes accurate and timely documentation of treatment data, lab specimens, and patient charts. Infection control involves assisting with audits, acting as a change agent, reinforcing practices, and participating in education. The Transitional Care Unit (TCU) responsibilities include following new patients through their first four weeks of dialysis, reinforcing education, liaising with staff, assisting with understanding home dialysis, performing treatments on TCU machines, and coordinating transition to modality choice.
