About The Position

The Department of Radiology invites applications for a Diagnostic X‑ray Medical Physicist to join the Section of Clinical Imaging Physics, a joint section with the Department of Medical Physics. This Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) Track faculty position offers the opportunity to contribute to patient-centered clinical imaging, advance imaging quality and safety, and engage in education and mentorship within a highly collaborative academic medical center. The UW Departments of Radiology and Medical Physics are internationally recognized for their impact on the development, translation, and clinical practice of medical imaging. Medical physicists play a central role in delivering high-quality imaging care, supporting clinical innovation and quality improvement, educating trainees and providers, and ensuring excellence in safety, accreditation, and regulatory compliance. This is an onsite position, with clinical work performed at UW Health Hospitals and Clinics on the main campus and throughout the Madison, Wisconsin area. Applicants interested in pursuing an academic career will be considered for the title listed: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor on the Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) track. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist. The Section of Clinical Imaging Physics is committed to support clinical excellence while enabling faculty growth, scholarly engagement, and leadership development. The UW Department of Radiology consists of more than 165 faculty across 13 sections, reading over 1,000,000 diagnostic scans per year. We train more than 50 residents and fellows per year and have an extensive presence throughout the medical student curriculum. Requirements

  • Completion of a Medical Imaging Physics residency by start date.
  • Board certified or board-eligible by American Board of Radiology (ABR) by start date.
  • Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) certified or eligible to obtain MQSA certification by start date.
  • Training and experience conducting X-ray equipment evaluations, including knowledge of requirements associated with maintaining regulatory and accreditation standards for Fluro-guided interventional system, Mammography, Computed Tomography (CT)
  • Travel is required. Must provide a valid driver's license. Employees may use their own transportation or receive approval for University Car Fleet usage.   • Excellent communication skills, needed for interacting with a variety of medical imaging personnel, including other physicists, technologists, radiologists, residents, fellows, and researchers.
  • Excellent organizational skills, required to ensure smooth functioning clinical operations and in support of educational programs
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team

  • CHS Faculty: For an appointment at Associate Professor or Professor on the CHS track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CHS track.
  • PhD in Physics, Medical Physics or closely related field is required by start date.

Responsibilities

  • Faculty in the Section of Clinical Imaging Physics share clinical coverage responsibilities while developing leadership in a specific domain.
  • Primary clinical support for this position includes x-ray-based imaging, with emphasis on fluoroscopy and fluoroscopy-guided interventional imaging, digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) mammography, and x-ray-guided breast biopsy, and computed tomography (CT).
  • Equipment evaluations, acceptance and accreditation testing, and quality assurance (QA) program oversight
  • Image quality troubleshooting and protocol optimization
  • Patient dose monitoring, review, benchmarking, and management
  • Participation on x‑ray safety and modality operations committees
  • Fluoroscopy safety and use training for clinical providers
  • Quote review, shielding design, and site planning
  • Maintenance of American Board of Radiology (ABR) and Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) certifications and engagement with emerging technologies
  • Scholarly activity and professional service
  • Qualified Medical Physicist (QMP) oversight of Medical Physics Assistants supporting fluoroscopy
  • Teaching in the Medical Physics Graduate Program
  • Mentoring Medical Imaging Physics residents
  • Supporting Radiology resident education and CME
