As part of a multidisciplinary team and under the direction of a radiologist, the Diagnostic Radiology Technologist performs radiographic procedures at a technical level that does not require constant supervision of technical details. The role requires independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in applying prescribed ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis. The technologist collects patients’ medical histories, answers questions about imaging procedures, follows providers’ instructions about areas to image, and guides patients through imaging safely and comfortably. The role also involves proficient operation of imaging equipment; knowledge of human anatomy and physiology and appropriate imaging techniques, including positioning and technical factors for children, older adults, and patients with debilitating conditions; and consultation with providers about imaging results and whether additional images are needed.
