About The Position

The Radiology Department at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is seeking a Diagnostic Radiologist specializing in Breast/Women’s Imaging. This is an independent contractor (1099) position. The department operates 24/7, 365 days a year, requiring services any day and any time. Standard shifts are 8.5 to 12.5 hours, including a 30-minute unpaid meal break. A typical work week is five days, from 0730 to 1630, but services may also include weekends and holidays. A typical month includes one to two weekend shifts and one to two weeknight shifts. Weekend (Day/Evening) and weekday evening shifts are scheduled monthly. One week of six night shifts (1900-0100) may be scheduled quarterly. Work hours can be flexible to ensure no more than 110 hours are worked in a two-week period per FTE. On-call services (off-site) are also required, involving general radiology on nights and weekends, including holidays, with a resident physician handling in-house call. On-call duties typically involve two to three days per month, requiring a response to pages within 10 minutes and image interpretation via teleradiology within 30 minutes, or returning to the hospital if needed. On-call cases cover all organ systems and modalities. On-call services begin at the end of the night shift and continue until 0730 the following day. Three-day weekends are split among staff radiologists. The on-call physician responds to an average of one to two calls per period, with an average of one or fewer calls requiring a facility visit per period. The on-call schedule is provided one month in advance. Overage hours may be required for patient safety or continuity of care, invoiced separately.

Requirements

  • Be current/proficient in Fluoroscopy or Ultrasound/Body Imaging.
  • Possess and maintain a current Board Certification in Diagnostic Radiology accredited by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Possess a fellowship in Body or Abdominal Imaging/Fluoroscopic Imaging OR have experience in Body Imaging/Fluoroscopic Imaging within the past 36 months.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and interpret special radiographic studies including fluoroscopic procedures (barium swallow, upper gastrointestinal studies, small bowel follow through, etc.); radiographic procedures of the genitourinary tract, and musculoskeletal system.
  • Provide academic instruction, including lectures, to all radiology residents and fellows (no more than 40% of the time).
  • Perform interpretation of ultrasound examinations (abdominal, small parts, vascular, pelvic, musculoskeletal, and neurological studies) and ultrasound guided procedures.
  • Perform interpretation of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exams.
  • Maintain a level of productivity comparable with that of other individuals performing similar services.
  • Participate in peer review and performance improvement activities.
  • Practice aseptic techniques as necessary and comply with infection control guidelines.
  • Function with an awareness and application of safety procedures.
  • Perform efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols.
  • Apply an awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care.
  • Participate in the implementation of the Family Advocacy Program as directed.
  • Exercise awareness and sensitivity to patient/significant others' rights.
  • Maintain an awareness of responsibility and accountability for own professional practice.
  • Participate in continuing education to meet own professional growth.
  • Attend and/or comply with all annual training classes required by the MTF.
  • Actively participate in the MTF’s Performance Improvement Program.
  • Participate in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members.
  • Provide training and/or clinical direction as applicable to supporting government employees.
  • Attend and participate in various meetings as directed.
  • Perform timely, accurate, and concise documentation of patient care.
  • Operate and manipulate automated systems such as MHS Genesis, ADS, and Clinical Information System (CIS).
  • Participate in clinical staff Performance Improvement (PI) and Risk Management (RM) functions.
  • Maintain DOD email account as directed and be responsive to all email and voicemail communications.
  • Exercise appropriate clinical delegation of tasks and duties.
  • Maintain documentation of all treatment provided in accordance with clinic directives and prepare such records and reports as may be required.
