About The Position

This position is for a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer at Vancouver General Hospital with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH). The role operates within a patient/client and family-centred framework and continuum-based care model, adhering to professional practice standards and the vision, values, and policies of the department across Lower Mainland Medical Imaging (LMMI) health authorities. The Sonographer performs a variety of ultrasound examinations including abdominal, obstetrical, pelvic, peripheral vascular, small parts, and echocardiography, while maintaining patient safety. Key duties involve managing requisitions, inputting data into the diagnostic imaging system, preparing patients, and conducting examinations using ultrasound and Doppler techniques. The role may also include performing venipuncture for contrast media injections under the direction of a Radiologist/Cardiologist and participating in committees, teams, and approved research projects. The position involves a rotating schedule, alternating one week on Cardiac sonography and one week on General Ultrasound.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a recognized training program in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography and Diagnostic General Sonography
  • Certified with Sonography Canada or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or certified with Sonography Canada and have passed the Sonography Canada Skills Assessment (CCSA)
  • Completion of Intravenous Therapy training course or applicable experience working in IV Therapy or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience when required by site practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theory and practice for sonography procedures including abdominal, obstetrical, pelvic, peripheral vascular, small parts and cardiac sonography
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the aseptic techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice of safe work procedures with diagnostic sonographic and medical imaging equipment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of imaging acquisition applications and digital imaging storage and distribution networks such as PACS
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research process and methodology
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (orally and in writing) and deal effectively with clients and their families, co-workers, physicians, other health care staff, and staff of external agencies
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others
  • Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others
  • Demonstrated ability in CPR techniques
  • Demonstrated computer skills including the ability to effectively use a computerized client care information system
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position
  • Required to report past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections as per Ministry of Health policy
  • May be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check

Responsibilities
