About The Position

The Diabetes Educator is healthcare professionals who focus on helping pediatric patients and their families with and/or at risk for diabetes and related conditions achieve behavior change goals which, in turn, lead to better clinical outcomes and improved health status. Diabetes Educators provide in-depth knowledge and skills in the biological and social sciences, communication, counseling, and education to provide diabetes self-management education/diabetes self-management training. Provides individualized diabetes self-management education/training to individuals and groups according to the Scope of Practice, and Standards of Practice, and Standards of Professional performance for Diabetes Educators.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years directly related experience inclusive of a minimum of 2 years pediatric nursing and a minimum of 2 years Diabetes self-management education preferred.
  • Three years' experience as a Clinical Dietitian with pediatrics care and/or minimum of 2 years Diabetes self-management experience preferred.
  • Current RN license to practice in Texas.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Registered Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Licensed Registered Dietitian Texas.
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Foods and Nutrition, or related area, from an accredited college or university.
  • Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Must be able to read, speak and comprehend English at a level necessary to follow oral and written instructions.
  • In-depth knowledge about current diabetes treatment management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form to patients, staff, physicians, and management staff.
  • Able to lead and effectively manage groups.
  • Ability to organize tasks and work independently.
  • Ability to develop a collaborative, therapeutic alliance with individuals.
  • Computer skills (Windows, email, internet, Microsoft Office)
  • Valid Drivers License

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Diabetes Educator (CDE) by the National Board of Diabetes Educators preferred.
  • Certified as an Insulin Pump Therapist preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of training and relevant experience will be considered to include Pediatric experience.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred.
