About The Position

Deliver comprehensive and integrated diabetes care that combines clinical management with patient self-management education and support. Educate, support, and advocate for patients with diabetes and their families/caregivers to promote effective disease management and optimize quality of care. Support the mission and vision of the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) and the Department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Dietetics, Nutrition, Pharmacy or health-related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a Registered Nurse or any other health-related role at AUBMC or 5-7 years of experience in a similar healthcare setting with expertise in Diabetes education.
  • Arabic and English (IET >/= 500).
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Thorough knowledge of diabetic policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to basic principles of safety procedures in health care settings.
  • Knowledge of pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical management, cardiometabolic conditions and self-management of diabetes.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) is preferred.
  • Member in the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a comprehensive assessment of diabetic patients, including clinical status, learning needs, health literacy, and barriers to learning.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate an individualized, age-appropriate plan of care in collaboration with the physician, patient, family/caregivers, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Provide evidence-based diabetes self-management education to patients and families/caregivers regarding the patient’s condition, symptoms, blood glucose monitoring, medications and their side effects, insulin administration, healthy eating, physical activity, warning signs, management of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, prevention of complications, sick-day management, coping, and other relevant aspects of diabetes care.
  • Initiate, educate, and support patients and families/caregivers on insulin pump therapy, as per the established plan of care, and on the safe and effective use of other diabetes technologies, including blood glucose meters, continuous glucose monitoring systems, automated insulin delivery systems, and other approved diabetes-related technologies.
  • Conduct individual and group patient education sessions related to diabetes prevention and management.
  • Perform telenursing activities, including but not limited to receiving phone calls from patients regarding medical questions and providing follow-up responses in coordination with the physician.
  • Document patient assessments, education provided, interventions, progress, and relevant communication with the healthcare team accurately and in accordance with the “Patient and Family Education Policy.”
  • Develop, review, and update diabetes patient education resources in alignment with current evidence, clinical guidelines, and the policy on “Development of Patient Education Material.”
  • Serve as a clinical resource to nursing staff and other healthcare professionals regarding diabetes education, self-management, diabetes technology, and related nursing practices.
  • Actively participate in the training of medical and nursing students, as well as trainees in diabetes care.
  • Actively participate in research activities pertinent to diabetes and integrate current research findings and evidence-based practices into clinical practice.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by Direct Supervisor.
