About The Position

Clear Street is hiring a DevOps Production Engineer to operate and improve its production trading systems. Production Engineering supports distributed network applications running on Linux hosts and integrated with liquidity venues, clearing houses, and exchanges. The systems use open-source and proprietary software to provide low-latency direct market access across asset classes. The role covers production monitoring, alerting, incident response, troubleshooting, deployment and testing tooling, and system optimization. The engineer will extend tooling such as Grafana, Wireshark, Ansible, and pytest; treat infrastructure as code; and work on software and hardware performance, including latency, throughput, and jitter. The position also involves interfacing with external venues and counterparties, identifying failure patterns, and making real-time risk/reward decisions that affect live trading. The role is based in Clear Street's New York office four days per week. Clear Street describes itself as a growing financial services firm modernizing brokerage infrastructure with a cloud-native clearing and custody platform.

Requirements

  • 1–3 years of professional experience in production engineering, site reliability engineering, systems administration, or a related field.
  • Comfort with Linux file and process management, system troubleshooting, debugging, configuration, and networking.
  • Strong command of Python for backend development, including writing clean, efficient, Pythonic code.
  • Understanding of the value of treating infrastructure as code.

  • Familiarity with C++ to read and interface with the high-performance trading engine codebase.
  • High-performance networking experience, including low deterministic latency and high throughput with minimal jitter; examples include kernel bypass, hardware timestamping, multicast, and cut-through switches.

Responsibilities

  • Operate production trading systems, including monitoring, alerting, incident response, and troubleshooting across Linux hosts and network infrastructure.
  • Build and extend monitoring and alerting tools, including Grafana and Wireshark.
  • Build and maintain deployment and testing tooling, including Ansible and pytest, using an infrastructure-as-code approach.
  • Optimize system performance at the software and hardware levels, including latency, throughput, and jitter.
  • Work with C++ and conduct hands-on hardware testing as part of system optimization.
  • Interface with external venue and counterparty systems, identify failure patterns, and propose upgrades to improve system resilience.
  • Make real-time risk/reward decisions affecting live trading and help traders and other non-technical users navigate those decisions.
