DevOps Engineer

Verra Mobility•Mesa, AZ

About The Position

The DevOps Engineer is a hands-on individual contributor who builds, operates, and continuously improves CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure supporting mobility products. The role is responsible for the reliability, security, and velocity of build and release automation across a hybrid environment spanning AWS, Azure, and on-premises data centers. The engineer works with DevOps, SRE, and release engineering teams and partners with Software Engineering, QE, Architecture, and Information Security to help hundreds of microservices ship safely multiple times per day. Success is measured by contributions to deployment frequency, change failure rate, mean time to recovery, platform availability, and delivery-pipeline security. The role also participates in on-call rotations and production incident response, including emergency activities outside standard hours as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in DevOps, SRE, Platform Engineering, or Cloud Infrastructure roles.
  • Hands-on experience operating production systems in at least one of AWS, Azure, or on-premises data centers.
  • Experience with CI/CD platforms, specifically Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions or comparable platforms such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, or CircleCI, including writing and maintaining pipeline as code.
  • Working experience with infrastructure as code; Terraform is preferred, and experience with CloudFormation, ARM/Bicep, Ansible, Puppet, or Chef is also relevant.
  • Experience with Kubernetes container orchestration (EKS, AKS, or self-managed) and container build and registry workflows such as Docker, ACR, ECR, or Harbor.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation with one or more of Python, Bash, PowerShell, Go, or TypeScript/JavaScript.
  • Working knowledge of Git workflows, branching strategies, and code review practices.
  • Familiarity with observability tools such as Datadog, New Relic, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Azure Monitor, or CloudWatch.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotations and respond to production incidents.
  • Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in mobility, transportation, tolling, parking, or other regulated, high-volume transaction-processing environments.
  • Exposure to compliance regimes such as SOC 2, PCI-DSS, ISO 27001, or FedRAMP.
  • Hands-on experience with service mesh, API gateways, or zero-trust networking patterns.
  • Experience with FinOps practices and cloud cost management tools such as CloudHealth, Apptio, or native cost explorers.
  • Experience migrating workloads between on-premises and cloud environments or between cloud providers.
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer, Azure Administrator or DevOps Engineer Associate, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), or HashiCorp Terraform Associate.
  • Familiarity with data and AI/ML platform operations, including model registries, feature stores, and ML pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines for hundreds of microservices and applications, including pipeline-as-code standards, build artifacts, container images, and deployment automation using Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions.
  • Contribute to improvements in DORA metrics, including deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate, and time to restore service.
  • Implement and maintain blue/green and canary releases, feature flags, rollback procedures, and pre-production validation gates.
  • Partner with QE to embed unit, integration, contract, performance, and security testing in delivery pipelines.
  • Build and operate infrastructure across AWS, Azure, and on-premises data centers, covering compute, networking, storage, identity, and connectivity between environments.
  • Manage and support Kubernetes clusters, container registries, service meshes, ingress controllers, and supporting middleware.
  • Write and maintain infrastructure as code using Terraform and platform-native tooling; participate in drift detection, peer review, and policy as code for infrastructure changes.
  • Support capacity planning, cost optimization, FinOps, and rightsizing across cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Build and maintain observability for metrics, logs, traces, and synthetic monitoring; help define SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets for critical services.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and respond to production incidents, contribute to root-cause analysis, and track corrective actions through completion.
  • Support chaos engineering exercises, game days, disaster recovery testing, and business continuity exercises.
  • Partner with Information Security to implement shift-left security practices, including security and policy scanning in delivery pipelines.
  • Manage secrets, certificates, and identity infrastructure across cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Help maintain audit readiness for SOC 2, PCI-DSS, and other applicable regulatory frameworks by producing evidence of pipeline controls, access management, and change governance.
  • Partner with Software Engineering to provide pipeline, observability, and infrastructure templates for new services from the outset.
  • Work with Architecture to align platform direction with the technology roadmap, including migrations between legacy and modern platforms.
  • Document runbooks, pipeline standards, and infrastructure patterns to share knowledge across the team.
  • Respond to system issues, participate in high-priority incident calls, and support emergency activities outside standard hours as needed.
