DevOps Engineer

Verra Mobility•Mesa, AZ

About The Position

We are seeking a skilled DevOps Engineer to build, operate, and continuously improve the CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure supporting mobility products. This is a hands-on individual contributor role responsible for the reliability, security, and velocity of build and release automation in a hybrid environment spanning AWS, Azure, and on-premises data centers. The engineer works with DevOps engineers, SREs, and release engineers, partnering with Software Engineering, QE, Architecture, and Information Security to support safe, frequent releases across hundreds of microservices. Success is measured by contributions to deployment frequency, change failure rate, mean time to recovery, platform availability, and delivery-pipeline security. The role covers CI/CD and release engineering; hybrid-cloud infrastructure operations; observability, reliability, and incident response; security and compliance; and cross-functional collaboration. It includes supporting on-call rotations and production incidents, with emergency activities outside standard hours as needed. Within 90 days, the engineer is expected to ramp up on the team's CI/CD platform, infrastructure, and observability stack across AWS, Azure, and on-premises environments, and independently own at least one pipeline or service area. Within six months, they are expected to contribute measurable improvements to deployment frequency and change failure rate for owned pipelines and actively participate in on-call and incident response. Within nine months, they are expected to be a go-to contributor in at least one platform domain, mentor newer engineers, and contribute to team standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in DevOps, SRE, Platform Engineering, or Cloud Infrastructure roles.
  • Hands-on experience operating production systems in at least one of AWS, Azure, or on-premises data centers, with an interest in developing depth across a hybrid environment.
  • Experience with CI/CD platforms, specifically Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions or comparable platforms such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, or CircleCI, including writing and maintaining pipeline-as-code.
  • Working experience with infrastructure-as-code; Terraform is preferred. CloudFormation, ARM/Bicep, Ansible, Puppet, or Chef experience is also relevant.
  • Experience with Kubernetes container orchestration (EKS, AKS, or self-managed) and container build and registry workflows such as Docker, ACR, ECR, or Harbor.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation in one or more of Python, Bash, PowerShell, Go, or TypeScript/JavaScript.
  • Working knowledge of Git workflows, branching strategies, and code review practices.
  • Familiarity with observability tools such as Datadog, New Relic, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Azure Monitor, or CloudWatch.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotations and respond to production incidents.
  • Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in mobility, transportation, tolling, parking, or other regulated, high-volume transaction-processing environments.
  • Exposure to compliance regimes such as SOC 2, PCI-DSS, ISO 27001, or FedRAMP.
  • Hands-on experience with service mesh, API gateways, or zero-trust networking patterns.
  • Experience with FinOps practices and cloud cost management tools such as CloudHealth, Apptio, or native cost explorers.
  • Experience migrating workloads between on-premises and cloud environments or between cloud providers.
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer, Azure Administrator or DevOps Engineer Associate, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), or HashiCorp Terraform Associate.
  • Familiarity with data and AI/ML platform operations, including model registries, feature stores, and ML pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, and continuously improve CI/CD pipelines for hundreds of microservices and applications, including pipeline-as-code standards, build artifacts, container images, and deployment automation.
  • Contribute to improvements in DORA metrics, including deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate, and time to restore service.
  • Implement and maintain release patterns such as blue/green deployments, canary releases, feature flags, rollback procedures, and pre-production validation gates.
  • Partner with QE to embed unit, integration, contract, performance, and security testing in pipelines.
  • Build and operate compute, networking, storage, identity, and connectivity infrastructure across AWS, Azure, and on-premises data centers.
  • Manage and support Kubernetes clusters, container registries, service meshes, ingress controllers, and supporting middleware.
  • Write and maintain infrastructure-as-code; participate in drift detection, peer review, and policy-as-code for infrastructure changes.
  • Support capacity planning, cost optimization, FinOps, and rightsizing across cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Build and maintain observability for metrics, logs, traces, and synthetic monitoring; help define SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets for critical services.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and respond to production incidents; contribute to root-cause analysis and track corrective actions to completion.
  • Support chaos engineering exercises, game days, disaster recovery testing, and business continuity exercises.
  • Partner with Information Security to implement shift-left security practices, including code, dependency, secret, container, and infrastructure-policy scanning in pipelines.
  • Manage secrets, certificates, and identity infrastructure across cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Help maintain audit readiness for SOC 2, PCI-DSS, and other applicable regulatory frameworks by producing evidence of pipeline controls, access management, and change governance.
  • Partner with Software Engineering to provide pipeline, observability, and infrastructure templates for new services from the outset.
  • Work with Architecture to align platform direction with the technology roadmap, including migrations between legacy and modern platforms.
  • Document runbooks, pipeline standards, and infrastructure patterns for knowledge sharing.
  • Respond to system issues, participate in high-priority incident calls, and support emergency activities outside standard hours as needed.
