The Developmental Specialist is primarily responsible for supporting people to achieve their personal dreams and goals. This role involves assessing each person receiving services for their hopes, dreams, and desires and providing supports that facilitate achievement. The specialist will support individuals in developing relationships within their community and with their natural supports, and assist them in participating fully in their community consistent with their interests. A key aspect of the role is ensuring that the rights of each person receiving services are protected and promoted at all times, and assisting individuals in developing advocacy skills, participating in advocacy efforts, and utilizing personal advocates. The position also requires providing support as needed to meet the emotional, physical, and medical needs of each person supported, and facilitating person-centered, effective, positive relationships using positive approaches that promote self-determination in all areas of life. The Developmental Specialist will provide input and recommendations into assessment and planning processes, and development of the individual’s plan, and implement the person’s plan fully, within the requirements of the service definition, and document as required. Accurate completion of all required documentation, including goal completion, actions toward outcomes, incident reports, and timesheets, is essential. Daily progress notes and communication logs are to be completed to assure appointments, goals, and interests are met. The role also includes assisting people receiving services with the day-to-day operation of their home such as housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, shopping, lawn care, vehicle cleanliness, and maintenance. Driving and travel as required, including arranging for or providing transportation, is also part of the responsibilities. The specialist will assist individuals with knowledge of emergency procedures and personal safety, utilizing effective judgment when dealing with safety issues, including fire safety by conducting drills, inspecting equipment, and practicing safety procedures in the community. Assisting new and/or current staff with orientation, mentoring, and training is also a responsibility. Sleepover at a residential setting may be required. Attendance and active participation in meetings and training are required, as is maintaining certification in all agency, state, and federal training requirements. The role demands demonstration of knowledge of and compliance with all agency policies and procedures, as well as state and federal statutes and regulations related to specific program areas, and following service definition guidelines. All other relevant responsibilities assigned by the supervisor must also be completed.
