About The Position

The Community Builders, Inc. (TCB) is a leading nonprofit real estate developer and owner focused on strengthening neighborhoods nationwide. The Development Associate role supports the Mid Atlantic development team, acting as a point person for projects in Virginia and North Carolina. This role involves collaboration with various TCB divisions, including Property Management, Community Life, Asset Management, and Finance, to advance pipeline projects and enhance resident outcomes. The Associate will gain exposure to all facets of the development process, such as due diligence, entitlements, regulatory approvals, financing, design, construction, and leasing, with a focus on delivering quality projects on schedule and within budget. TCB seeks candidates who are creative problem solvers, resourceful, tenacious, collaborative, and driven to make a difference in affordable housing.

Requirements

  • A passion for socially responsible real estate development
  • Strong financial and analytical skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to present to audiences that are racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse
  • Ability to multi-task, handling multiple projects at once and consistently meeting deadlines
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Excel, and Project
  • Bachelor's degree with 1-3 years' work experience in a related field or equivalencies

Nice To Haves

  • Adobe skills a plus
  • Direct experience/familiarity with affordable housing development is ideal but not required

Responsibilities

  • Partner with senior members of the Mid Atlantic development team as a point person for projects in Virginia and North Carolina.
  • Collaborate with TCB staff in other divisions (Property Management, Community Life, Asset Management, Finance) to advance pipeline projects and deepen resident-focused outcomes.
  • Learn about all aspects of the development process, including due diligence, entitlements, regulatory approvals, financing, design, construction, and leasing.
  • Support deal closures that will provide quality housing for residents in need.
  • Organize responses to Requests for Proposals.
  • Represent the organization at community meetings and public forums/events.
  • Identify key risks and learn strategies to mitigate them.
