About The Position

The AES Corporation, a global power company with 8,300 employees across 12 countries, is seeking a Development Manager to lead project development within AES Clean Energy’s Western Wind Development region. This role involves managing wind projects in the Western U.S., including WECC and CAISO service areas. The Development Manager will lead complex renewable energy projects and portfolio/sub-market development activities with minimal oversight, supporting strategic decision-making, driving cross-functional alignment, and representing AES with external stakeholders such as regulators, utilities, permitting authorities, and community partners. The position requires close collaboration with project SME teams to understand development activities, build project consensus, and execute project strategy. The role also involves owning complex relationships with external and internal partners, and clearly presenting AES’s position in meetings. This position is part of AES Clean Energy’s project development group and will work closely with multiple cross-functional teams. While the position may be hybrid, there is a strong preference for the team member to be located near AES’ Louisville, CO office. The role requires the ability to manage a project team, multitask, and travel as needed.

Requirements

Typically 7-10 years of project development experience in renewable energy development.
Undergraduate degree, preferably in renewable energy, urban planning, logistics, finance, business, engineering, project/construction management or equivalent.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
Knowledge of renewable energy project development, utilities, interconnection, permitting, contracting.
Knowledge of renewable energy and energy storage technologies.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are including public speaking, conflict resolution, and/or platform skills for executive management presentations.
Self-starter, very self-reliant and capable of operating with minimum supervision.
Willingness and ability to travel 30% on average but more as required by projects.
Experience utilizing CRM systems and developing metrics.
Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

Lead all aspects of complex project development and portfolio and or sub market management.
Ownership of project development schedules and budgets.
Evaluate and manage risk across timelines, permitting, policy, and technical constraints.
Lead project meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
Show the leadership needed to communicate and influence employees at all levels regarding project risks, opportunities, and recommended action.
Effectively communicate and lead presentations clearly and with confidence to SLT+1.
Manage contract obligations in key project documents.
Lead Project Discretionary Permitting including permit strategy, tracking permit efforts, working with local AHJs, presenting at permit hearings.
Coordinate closely with the broader cross-functional teams.
Coordinate for delivery of site and environmental studies, surveys and diligence reports.
Work with internal and external Engineering teams as they progress engineering and design.
Work with internal construction management team on contractor selection process.
Coordinate with execution team on securing ministerial permits.
Handoff projects once fully developed and permitted to the project execution team.
Assist project finance through diligence questions and providing required documents.
Coordinate additional resources or outside consultants/contractors as well as managing and meeting expenses throughout project development.
Provide support and analysis for Business Development pipeline reporting.
