About The Position

The Development Giving Officer manages a portfolio of mid-level donors and prospects to secure philanthropic support for Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. Focused on gifts typically ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, this role identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards donors to advance the priorities of the five schools within Virginia Health Sciences. Working collaboratively with faculty, department leaders and development colleagues, the Development Giving Officer supports both individual fundraising goals and departmental priorities, helping to generate current-use and endowed support aligned with institutional strategy. The position is accountable for meeting annual fundraising targets, maintaining an active portfolio, and contributing to the overall growth of the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at ODU philanthropic program.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive fundraising experience within a medium to large sized non-profit organization, preferably in academic medicine, healthcare or higher education.
• Demonstrated strength in written, verbal and interpersonal communication, including the ability to prepare donor correspondence, proposals, and stewardship communications tailored to diverse audiences.
• Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to engage donors, faculty, and institutional leaders in support of philanthropic priorities.
• Experience utilizing a donor relationship management system (e.g. Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, or comparable CRM) to track activity, manage pipelines and inform strategy.
• Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and evaluate fundraising strategies that advance programmatic or institutional goals.

• Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) is preferred but not required.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study such as nonprofit management, business, healthcare or public administration and/or marketing related areas of study.

Responsibilities

• Portfolio Management: Manage a portfolio of 130 – 150 individuals, including community members, alumni and grateful patients. Conduct substantive prospect engagement through meetings, calls, and written communications to qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward mid-level donors. Maintain accurate portfolio strategy and activity to meet established performance and fundraising goals.
• Gift Strategy: Develop and execute donor strategies to identify, cultivate solicit, and steward mid-level gifts, typically in the $10,000 - $50,000 range, supporting education, research, clinical programs, and strategic initiatives across Brock Virginia Health Sciences. Assess donor readiness and coordinate transitions or joint strategies with annual giving or major gift colleagues when appropriate.
• Funding Initiatives: Lead the implementation of mid-level giving outreach efforts, including targeted appeals, donor renewals, qualification strategies, and tailored stewardship communications for assigned prospects and donors.
• Collaboration: Partner with advancement colleagues, department chairs, and program leaders to strengthen alignment between donor interests and institutional priorities. Facilitate meaningful connections between donors and faculty or programs to deepen engagement and philanthropic impact.
• Education and Internal Engagement: Serve as a liaison between development and assigned departments, ensuring colleagues are informed about programs, priorities, and funding opportunities. Support internal partners in understanding how to effectively engage prospective donors and communicate the mission and needs of their programs.
