About The Position

The Development Director will serve as a thought-partner and strategist in achieving sustainability and growth with a multi-year development strategy that will grow CCO’s financial resources and community visibility. Through partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, this role will design and execute a comprehensive development plan aligned with organizational goals and focused on major donors, grants, events, bequests, and contributions. The Director will manage a portfolio of individual major donors and prospects, developing tailored, individual strategies to enhance relationships that will lead to deepened connections and increased giving to support Catholic Charities’ mission. In partnership with the CEO and Major Gifts Officer, the role will establish and oversee a major gifts program that balances a focus on stewarding existing and cultivating new donors, achieves stronger relationships, new and sustained giving, and actively manages all aspects of the individual giving cycle. The Director will lead the annual creation of the Development department budget, track and report on budget to actuals, and work closely with the Finance Director to achieve alignment in tracking Development department generated revenue. They will also work with program directors to identify, prioritize, and develop compelling narratives and rationales for donors, identify and advance new funding opportunities, and strengthen systems for donor retention, upgrade, and recognition. This role will support the fundraising efforts of the Chief Executive Officer, oversee event strategy in partnership with the Development Associate, and collaborate closely with the Communications Director to ensure consistent organizational messaging. The Director will utilize research on donors and local industry trends, prepare data for the CEO and Board Strategic Growth Committee, and ensure the accuracy and integrity of donor data in the CRM. They will lead, coach, and inspire the Development team, manage staff through regular check-ins and performance reviews, and identify professional development needs. The Director will engage and support board members in fundraising activities, serve as staff lead to the board’s Strategic Growth Committee, and act as a visible spokesperson for the organization. Maintaining accurate systems and files, participating in required trainings and meetings, adhering to policies, and performing other assigned duties are also key aspects of this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience plus a minimum of 7 years previous experience with building development strategies, grants, events and major gift and/or planned giving fundraising experience required.
  • Minimum 10 years progressive nonprofit fundraising and leadership experience preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills with minimum 3 years progressive experience supervising staff and building collaborative teams.
  • History of continued success in major gifts, donor stewardship, events and grants.
  • Proven track record of personally soliciting and securing individual six-figure gifts ($100,000+) from high-net-worth individuals.
  • Demonstrated success in leading capital or comprehensive campaigns raising $1,000,000+ from diverse revenue streams.
  • Experience managing a development program within an organization with a $7-10M+ budget preferred.
  • Familiarity with Portland philanthropic community and recent individual funding trends and motivations is strongly desired.
  • Strong relationship builder with excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to Catholic Charities mission to work in partnership with vulnerable populations to achieve lasting solutions to poverty and injustice.
  • Proficiency with donor databases/CRM systems and commonly used workplace technologies, including Microsoft Office and SharePoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage emerging technologies to enhance productivity, accuracy, and overall work quality.
  • Demonstrate judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential matters.
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize work, be proactive, take initiative, follow through, and simultaneously manage multiple priorities to ensure goals are met in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee, in close partnership with the Development Associate, event strategy and provide strategic oversight of fundraising events to maximize revenue and donor engagement.
  • Ensure events align with broader fundraising and relationship-building goals.
  • Partners closely with the Communications Director to ensure consistent organizational messaging for campaigns, appeals, fundraising events, and donor engagement efforts, as well as with general organizational communications.
  • Utilize research on donors and local industry trends with a goal of identifying strategies for increasing support and uncovering viable prospects (e.g. DonorSearch, Association of Fundraising Professionals, etc.).
  • Prepare data for the CEO and the Board Strategic Growth Committee.
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of donor data in the donor CRM, Donor Perfect, with support from the Development Associate for gift processing and acknowledgements.
  • Use donor data to inform strategies and track key performance indicators.
  • Lead, coach, and inspire the Development team to meet and surpass revenue and engagement goals.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration and innovation.
  • Appropriately manage the team through conducting regular one-on-one check-ins and performance reviews for all assigned staff, establish work plans and priorities, provide constructive feedback, and take corrective action as needed.
  • Identify, provide and track professional development and training needs for all assigned staff.
  • Engage and support board members in fundraising activities.
  • Serve as staff lead to the board’s Strategic Growth Committee.
  • Serve as a visible, articulate spokesperson for the organization, representing the Agency as public events and meetings as requested.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate systems and files.
  • Participate in trainings and meetings as requested and required.
  • Adherence to Catholic Charities policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
