Development Accountant (63310)

ABODE COMMUNITIESLos Angeles, CA
$70,000 - $85,000Onsite

About The Position

Since 1968, Abode Communities has been a nonprofit affordable housing developer and architect rooted in community development across California. We build more than housing: we foster inclusive communities where families and individuals can thrive alongside their neighbors. Abode Communities is growing — and we're looking for a detail-driven accountant who wants their work to have a visible, lasting impact. As our Development Accountant, you'll sit at the intersection of finance and mission, managing the dollars that turn affordable housing projects from blueprints into homes. You'll own the accounting for our developments from acquisition through construction, working closely with Development Project Managers, lenders, contractors, and vendors to keep every project funded, on track, and audit-ready.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree plus at least two years of accounting experience
  • Real estate or construction accounting experience with multiple sets of books is a strong plus
  • Comfort with computerized accounting, word processing, and spreadsheet tools (e.g., MRI, AvidXchange, Microsoft Word and Excel)
  • Strong analytical skills — you can break down numbers, spot patterns, and turn data into clear, workable answers
  • Excellent planning and time management, with the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines
  • A collaborative, communicative style — you build good working relationships with project managers, lenders, and vendors alike
  • A valid California driver's license, current auto insurance, and access to an insured vehicle for occasional travel within our service area

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, submit, and track funding draws to multiple lenders across the acquisition, predevelopment, and construction phases of affordable housing projects
  • Assist in preparing cost certifications, working closely with the Development team and external auditors
  • Total Job Costing: ensuring the budget is in line with contracts, change orders, and actual project costs
  • Verify contractor and subcontractor lien releases before payments go out
  • Reconcile construction-in-progress and related general ledger accounts to draw sheets and to disbursed amounts
  • Partner with Development staff and Accounts Payable to keep vendor invoices and draw requests moving on schedule
  • Review cash disbursements and process deposits accurately and on time
  • Prepare journal entries and maintain general ledger, balance sheet, and income/expense schedules
  • Reconcile monthly A/R, A/P, cash, and inter-entity advances; reconcile loan draws and job cost reports to the general ledger
  • Prepare audit schedules and support external auditors in delivering on-time annual audit reports
  • Contribute to special projects as assigned by Development Accounting leadership
