Developer Productivity Engineer

Eka•Cambridge, MA

About The Position

Eka Robotics is seeking a Developer Productivity Engineer to own and improve the development experience for their researchers and engineers. This role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining the company's build system and developer tooling. The goal is to enhance productivity by enabling faster feedback loops, ensuring reliable builds, simplifying onboarding, and minimizing interruptions for the team. The engineer will work directly with the users of these tools, making a tangible impact on the speed and efficiency of robotics research and deployment.

Requirements

  • Track record of building and maintaining build systems, developer tools, or CI infrastructure used by other engineers.
  • Ability to write clear, maintainable software and treat internal tools as products with users.
  • Deep understanding of dependency graphs, caching, reproducibility, and the tradeoffs involved in speeding up builds and tests.
  • Proficiency with Python, Linux, shell tooling, and debugging problems across language and system boundaries.
  • Ability to take an ambiguous problem, work with its users, and carry a solution through implementation and adoption.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with Bazel
  • Experience managing C++ toolchains, Python packaging, GPU software dependencies, or machine learning training infrastructure.
  • Prior robotics or reinforcement learning experience

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the Bazel build system, including build rules, toolchains, dependency management, and remote caching.
  • Optimize build and test speed and reliability for both local development and CI environments.
  • Improve everyday engineering workflows, such as setting up development environments, debugging tests, and packaging training jobs.
  • Build internal tooling as a product, making common tasks straightforward and failures easy to understand.
  • Collaborate with researchers and robotics engineers to identify friction points, prioritize improvements, and measure their impact.
  • Ensure development environments and build outputs are reproducible across Linux, macOS, and GPU-enabled containers.
