About The Position
Viam is seeking a Senior Developer Advocate to expand its Developer Advocacy team to the West Coast. This role involves helping developers discover and utilize the Viam robotics engineering platform. The Developer Advocate will create software and hardware projects, transform them into educational content, and engage with developer communities through events, workshops, and online platforms. Projects can range from robotic arms and computer-vision machines to smart devices and physical AI experiments. The position reports to the SVP of Product & Education.
Requirements
- A proven history of producing high-quality technical content for developers (e.g., tutorials, videos, sample projects, workshops, talks).
- Experience as a software engineer, including building, shipping, and maintaining production software used by end-users.
- Proficiency in Python, Go, C++, or TypeScript is particularly relevant.
- Strong technical judgment and the ability to independently scope, build, debug, and iterate on software projects with minimal supervision.
- Hands-on experience with hardware, IoT, embedded systems, electronics, maker projects, or similar physical systems (professional robotics experience is not required).
- The ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts without sacrificing technical depth.
- A solid understanding of how developers discover, evaluate, and adopt new technologies.
- Comfort with public speaking, teaching, appearing on video, and direct engagement with developer communities.
- The capacity to work quickly, experiment frequently, and make decisions about project feasibility and implementation.
- Willingness to travel and participate in occasional evening or weekend events.
Responsibilities
- Represent Viam at conferences, meetups, hackathons, and other developer events through speaking, teaching, and building alongside developers.
- Build creative robotics projects that showcase the capabilities of the Viam platform.
- Create technical content, including tutorials, videos, sample code, workshops, demos, and talks, based on built projects and learnings.
- Increase engagement in Viam's Discord and other developer communities, while building personal credibility within relevant technical communities.
- Explore emerging technologies and developer tools to identify opportunities for Viam's participation or development.
- Build, assemble, test, and troubleshoot the software and hardware for demos and projects.
- Relay developer feedback to the Product and Engineering teams, and analyze engagement and platform activation data to inform future focus areas.
