Under general supervision, the Detention Technician performs detention security and facility support functions within the Department of Detention. Duties may include controlling access to secure areas, monitoring electronic security systems, communicating with staff and inmates, documenting operational activity, and performing sanitation, laundry, food service support, utility, and supply distribution duties. Depending on assignment, the position may include supervising inmate work details while following agency policies and security procedures. The employee performs related work as directed. The role is scheduled for shifts that may include weekends, holidays, overtime, and extended emergency activation events such as hurricanes. Employees must be able to work any shift and accept flexible work assignments, including voluntary and/or mandatory overtime as needed to meet agency needs. Continued employment is contingent upon participating in and satisfactorily completing the established in-house training program within the initial probationary period, and employees must comply with the uniformed dress code. Work is performed in a detention environment with provisions for employee security and protection. The position may involve intermittent exposure to routine detention-environment conditions, including loud noise, pathogens, and violent behavior. Regular physical contact with inmates is not part of the position, although indirect contact may occur during normal operations. Physical tasks may include bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling, standing or sitting for extended periods, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects generally weighing 20–50 pounds; heavier objects may occasionally be involved.
